As a long-time follower of David Ayer and his work, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia every time he shares his thoughts about the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad. It’s like watching a beloved band perform an unreleased album live; you know it could be something magical, but the odds are stacked against it.
David Ayer, who directed the 2016 movie “Suicide Squad”, clarifies his ongoing efforts to release his director’s cut of the film. He recently addressed this issue on the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. Despite having a successful year with the release of “The Beekeeper”, starring Jason Statham, Ayer still reflects on what could have been if Warner Bros. had released his version of the controversial “Suicide Squad”. On X, he frequently expresses a wide range of feelings about the film. Just recently, Ayer posted a fan-made poster and wrote a caption that hinted at nostalgia.
I’m eagerly looking forward to the day when my genuine movie can be unveiled. Your ongoing backing and curiosity are greatly valued. Let’s keep hoping for #ReleaseTheAyerCut!
In response to a comment from @DrHouseGaming2 suggesting that if the movie was already good, there would be no need for a special version, Ayer replied optimistically and genuinely about his upcoming altered version of the film.
“The optimal version hasn’t surfaced yet. Understanding how drastically two versions of a film can differ can be challenging for those not in the industry. If you haven’t appreciated what you’ve watched so far, I invite you to witness my original vision and make an informed decision afterwards.
To be completely transparent, I’m unsure if WB will ever release my version. The decision ultimately lies with James and the studio, as they manage it according to their discretion. It’s not within my power to influence this. However, I strongly feel that fans who are eager to see it would greatly enjoy watching my edit.
If it’s not for you, I totally get that. We all have different taste and likes and dislikes.”
The hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut mirrors the fervor of fans who wanted Zack Snyder’s version of the Justice League movie. After much clamor, the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut led to a significant investment by Warner Bros., amounting to $70 million for Snyder’s project. The 4-hour superhero film was an upgrade compared to the initial version directed by Joss Whedon, but it was still a pricey endeavor that seems unlikely to be repeated, especially for a less popular IP like this one, which was quickly overshadowed by James Gunn’s 2021 movie, The Suicide Squad, which many consider superior.
Is It Too Late for the Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’?
In essence, the original DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has been phased out, making way for a fresh start under the leadership of James Gunn and his innovative vision for the DC Universe (DCU). The previous era has come to an end, with the old stories being laid to rest. The focus is now on Gunn’s new direction for the superhero series. Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’ was a part of a contentious franchise, and the response to the DCEU was inconsistent. If Ayer were to release his film at any point, it would serve as a relic of the past.
As an ardent supporter, I can’t help but feel that Ayer’s dream of his film being released seems to hang by a thread. If there’s any chance at all, it would require minimal effort, which is highly improbable. Unfortunately, Ayer hasn’t disclosed the extent to which the ‘Ayer Cut’ has been completed. Warner Bros., undeniably, would need to inject some funds to transform this project from a “work in progress” into a polished film worthy of public viewing. Fans can only hold onto Ayer’s optimism and hope for a miracle. The question lingers: Beyond a niche group of enthusiasts, does the world at large express interest in the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad? Does it truly matter?
