As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the rise and fall of many superhero franchises, I must say that the upcoming reimagining of Superman by James Gunn and David Corenswet has piqued my interest like no other. The teaser trailer alone was enough to send chills down my spine, with its hauntingly beautiful rendition of John Williams’ iconic theme song and a vulnerable, battered Man of Steel that left me on the edge of my seat.
David Corenswet secured the role as the latest Superman in the DCU, outshining numerous other contenders. Yet, even after impressing with his performance as both Clark Kent and Kal-El during the audition, director James Gunn requested that Corenswet refine a couple of key aspects: his physical build (specifically, his shoulders) and on-screen emotional depth or vulnerability.
From Corenswet’s portrayal, it seems like he has meticulously fulfilled both of Gunn’s expectations, as indicated by DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures’ record-breaking teaser trailer released on December 20. However, fans won’t be able to fully assess the emotional depth (vulnerability) until the summer of 2025. In an interview with Screen Brief, Gunn praised Corenswet’s “remarkable commitment” to the Superman role.
As a passionate movie critic, I can confidently say that the actor who landed the coveted role of Clark Kent/Superman left no stone unturned in his relentless pursuit of authenticity. He immersed himself completely in the character, delving into the source material with fervor, devouring countless comics to grasp the essence of the hero he was about to embody.
When David received his job offer, I advised him to focus on two areas: improving his physique, specifically his shoulders, and developing his emotional openness, or vulnerability. For the following six months, he dedicated himself to these tasks, making progress with both. Enlarging his physical presence and learning how to convey vulnerability effectively on screen, which was a challenge for him, as it is also challenging for Superman.
Clark Kent’s Humanity Plays a Huge Role in ‘Superman’
The groundbreaking teaser for DC and Warner Bros.’ Superman, starring Corenswet, showcases a weary and wounded Man of Steel who turns to Krypto for help following a severe injury. It’s unclear whether Kal-El has been harmed by Kryptonite or if James Gunn is incorporating his solar sickness from the All-Star Superman comic books into the storyline. In an interview, Gunn described this portrayal of a vulnerable Last Son of Krypton as an “intriguing choice.
I find that choice intriguing. It’s a reminder of the challenges we’re facing here. We’re confronting Superman, a figure embodying rather conventional ideals and optimism, an image that’s been shaped and reshaped over time. Not just Superman, but the very essence of kindness too. I believe this is about preserving those traditional values, yet presenting them in a refreshingly new light.
One of the standout features of the Superman teaser trailer is its powerful ability to stir feelings, particularly hope, among viewers. This could be attributed to the electrifying guitar version of John Williams’ iconic Superman theme, or the young boy’s plea for Superman’s intervention. Gunn’s work resonates deeply with long-time fans, so it’s no wonder that human aspects of Clark Kent will be crucial in the upcoming film. Gunn further commented:
The essence of this film revolves around Clark Kent’s humanity. Although he is an extraordinary alien with superpowers, he is also deeply human, experiencing emotions and making decisions every day. Despite his occasional failures, the story primarily focuses on his struggle to make the right choices.
In the upcoming movie by James Gunn, titled Superman, set to release in theaters on July 11, 2025, the Last Son of Krypton (Superman) will encounter a formidable foe in Lex Luthor, portrayed exceptionally well by Nicholas Hoult. Furthermore, he’ll also battle Ultraman and possibly Brainiac. Yet, the core of the film revolves around Clark Kent, symbolizing the hope that his heroic alter ego instills. Fans can now eagerly anticipate the return of their beloved Man of Steel on the big screen once more.
