David Cronenberg’s ‘The Shrouds’ Goes to Sideshow, Janus for U.S. Release

As a long-time fan of David Cronenberg’s unique blend of horror and thought-provoking narratives, I am thrilled to hear that Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired the U.S. rights for his latest sci-fi drama, “The Shrouds.” Having seen glimpses of this film in Cannes, Toronto, and New York Film Festival, I can’t wait to experience it on the big screen next spring.

The American distribution rights for David Cronenberg’s sci-fi drama, titled “The Shrouds“, have been acquired by Sideshow and Janus Films.

The upcoming U.S. distribution agreement comes after the film’s debut on a global stage in Cannes, a first showing in North America at Toronto, and further screenings at the New York Film Festival next month. Sideshow and Janus are planning a theatrical release in spring 2025.

Sideshow and Janus Films are collaborating once more with body horror director Cronenberg, following past releases of films like Videodrome and Naked Lunch. According to their shared statement, this film showcases Cronenberg at his most intelligent, heartfelt, and romantic, offering a thought-provoking thriller featuring standout performances from Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger.

Initially, Cronenberg proposed this project to Netflix executives, drawing inspiration from his personal sorrow following the death of his wife in 2017. However, despite funding for a pilot episode, Netflix decided not to proceed with the project any further.

In a different take:

Cronenberg stated to The Hollywood Reporter before the Cannes competition that while the film is based on some genuine emotions and real people, it being grounded in reality doesn’t necessarily make it a great movie. He emphasized that it must still be an excellent film.

In a U.S. agreement regarding the distribution of “The Shrouds,” it was Sideshow and Janus Films, along with SBS International, who handled the negotiations. The producer credits are jointly held by Saïd Ben Saïd, Martin Katz, and Anthony Vaccarello from Saint Laurent.
