After Shazam! Fury of the Gods, David F. Sandberg wanted to stop directing “IP-based movies.”
David F. Sandberg directed the 2019 movie “Shazam!” and its subsequent sequel in 2023. Following a poor showing at the box office and significant backlash from the second DC film, Sandberg expressed his intention to move away from the genre of these types of movies during an interview with GamesRadar+ on Tuesday.
He explained candidly that fans can become extremely passionate and furious to the point of making threats against you. Following ‘Shazam! 2’, he admitted feeling reluctant about taking on any more franchise films as he felt the potential risks weren’t justified.
Following the criticism surrounding “Shazam!”, Sandberg expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that he was prepared to transition away from the superhero genre. He began his “Shazam” venture immediately after “Annabelle: Creation” in 2017, so it’s been quite some time of focusing solely on “Shazam”. This is what he shared two years ago.
He expressed his eagerness to venture into new territories, especially horror, and try out different things. This is exactly what he did with his latest project, the film adaptation of “Until Dawn,” which originated as a 2015 survival game. His attitude towards directing projects based on intellectual properties (IPs) changed when he received the “Until Dawn” script, and he immediately thought, “This would be such an exciting opportunity!
As a gamer, I can tell you from my perspective, creating Until Dawn turned out to be a complex and challenging endeavor, even more so than working on both Shazam! films combined. Yet, every bit of the struggle was worth it because seeing this project come to life felt like a long-cherished dream realized.
He admitted that the film was challenging to produce given its ambitious nature during that period with limited resources. However, his eagerness to return to horror filmmaking made it a dream come true for him. This project allowed him to deliver numerous R-rated kills, gore, special effects, makeup, and monsters, which he had yearned to do since childhood. Despite the challenges, this was a highly rewarding experience for him.
Until Dawn hits theaters on Friday.
