As a devoted cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that David Fincher‘s unique style and dark sensibilities would have made for a fascinating take on the Harry Potter franchise. His penchant for unsettling thrillers and bleak narratives could have given us a Hogwarts unlike any we’ve seen before – perhaps with a dash of drug-addled out-of-work actors, á la Withnail and I.
However, Warner Bros.’ desire for a more polished and fashionable Wizarding World ultimately proved to be an insurmountable obstacle. It’s a shame that we never got to see Fincher’s vision come to life, but his impressive filmography serves as a testament to the brilliance he brings to every project he tackles. I can only imagine how much better his failed projects like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequels, World War Z 2, and Rendezvous with Rama would have been if they had seen the light of day.
On a lighter note, I wonder what it would be like if Fincher was given the chance to adapt BioShock or even create an update on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – now that would be something to look forward to!
One of the most cherished fantasy film series ever made is none other than Harry Potter. Enthusiasts journey far and wide to explore the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London, purchase their very own wands at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida, or pay tribute to Hogwarts by visiting King’s Cross Station in London annually. You may have also been asked about your preferred house. However, it’s intriguing to ponder what the franchise would look like if David Fincher directed it. Could we expect Harry to discover a box containing Dumbledore’s head? Or perhaps Voldemort is an aspect of Harry Potter’s disturbed mind? It’s clear that it would have been quite unusual. Interestingly, David Fincher has hinted at how bizarre his potential Harry Potter film could have been.
In an interview with Variety, the esteemed director behind both Fight Club and Se7en shared his early talks with Warner Bros. regarding directing a Harry Potter film. “I recall expressing, ‘I’m not interested in creating the sanitized Hollywood version of it,'” the director stated, a sentiment that resonated with anyone who has watched a David Fincher film. Known for crafting some of the most gripping and unsettling thrillers over the past three decades, Fincher was keen to bring an unconventional twist to the Harry Potter series when the chance presented itself. He further explained:
I’d like to create something reminiscent of ‘Withnail and I’, but with an unsettling, eerie feel.
1987 saw the release of the film “Withnail and I“, an unlikely companion to the beloved series “Harry Potter“. The movie stars Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann as two jobless, drug-addicted actors embarking on a disastrous trip to the countryside for their vacation – perhaps a prequel to Harry Potter’s encounter with Liquid Luck? However, it is clear that Warner Bros. declined David Fincher’s pitch for a dark, drug-infused Wizarding World. He further explained:
“They were like, ‘We want Thom Browne [the fashion designer] schooldays by way of Oliver.'”
‘Harry Potter’ Is One of David Fincher’s Many Failed Projects
Previously stated, David Fincher is a highly respected director in the film industry today. His body of work is outstanding, encompassing notable films like “Fight Club,” “Se7en,” “Gone Girl,” “Zodiac,” “The Social Network,” “Mindhunter,” and an episode of “Love, Death & Robots.” However, it’s intriguing to ponder the quality of his work if some of his past unrealized projects had been completed.
For approximately two decades, David Fincher has been connected to multiple unproduced films that remained unrealized. He planned to direct the sequels of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” featuring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, as well as a sequel to Brad Pitt’s “World War Z”. Moreover, he was intended to adapt Arthur C. Clarke’s renowned sci-fi novel “Rendezvous With Rama”, and there was a phase where he was slated to direct an update on “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. At one point, Fincher was also associated with an adaptation of the popular video game “BioShock”. Fingers are crossed that his upcoming American remake of “Squid Game” will eventually be released for viewing, as even the original creator expressed perplexity about the idea.
