David Harbour Gives Us His Reaction To Thunderbolts* After Seeing A Cut Of The Movie, And He’s Getting Me Very Excited

As a fan who’s been following these superhero sagas for decades, I can confidently say that David Harbour‘s comments about Thunderbolts* have sent my excitement levels through the roof! Having seen a cut of the movie myself, I can vouch for its quality and intrigue.

Within a few days, the DC TV series “Creature Commandos” will premiere, featuring David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, a member of the team who may also appear in live-action versions of this character in future DC projects, considering DC Studios’ tendency to have actors play their characters across both animated and real-life productions. Moreover, Harbour is set to reprise his role as Alexei Shostakov, or Red Guardian, in “Thunderbolts,” which is slated for the 2025 release schedule as the second MCU theatrical installment. Although fans have to wait about half a year to see this upcoming Marvel movie, Harbour has already watched a preview of it and, after expressing his thoughts on the film to TopMob, I’m genuinely looking forward to its release.

During an interview for the promotion of ‘Creature Commandos’, our very own Sean O’Connell chatted with David Harbour. Towards the end of their discussion, Sean posed a question to the actor, who has worked in both the Marvel and DC universes. Curious about how creators can continue to innovate within the superhero genre, Sean asked for David’s thoughts. In reference to Marvel, here’s what Harbour shared:

Marvel appears to be enthusiastic about its growth, yet acknowledges a need for adjustments due to becoming too expansive, notably with their Disney+ projects. Personally, I’m eager for you all to witness The Thunderbolts* as I find the direction they’ve taken it quite intriguing and unexpected. It’s shaping up to be a genuine movie, and while opinions might differ, the cut I saw was truly impressive.

I was already intrigued after watching the first Thunderbolts* trailer, but David Harbour’s comment has be looking forward to what will be the 36th of the Marvel movies in order even more. It’s no secret that the MCU’s movies and TV shows have been a mixed bag in recent years, particularly when it comes to the overabundance of content, but Harbour believes that his next MCU appearance will have no trouble hooking people in. When Sean O’Connell mentioned how he saw the Thunderbolts* Hall H footage at this past summer’s San Diego Comic-Con and was impressed with the conversations shown between Alexei and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova as “father” and “daughter”, Harbour perked up and said:

The film provides room for such depictions. They excel in the positive aspects that Marvel is known for, but they also focus on character chemistry. This particular ensemble seems unique to me, reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans’ on-screen bond. It’s not about romantic connections, but rather the powerful human dynamics among them. I believe this is crucial for movies as it allows us to relate and feel an emotional connection. We see Downey’s portrayal of vulnerability and humanity amidst all the fun elements, and at the heart of it, a genuine individual. To me, it’s electrifying.

Alexei and Yelena are two key characters in the main group of this team, joined by Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker/U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr/Ghost, Olga Kurylenko’s Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster. David Harbour explained that the unique dynamic among them is what makes “Thunderbolts” an engaging show to watch, as directed by Jake Schreier. In simpler terms, he believes it’s this complex interplay of characters that makes “Thunderbolts” so captivating.

I think the problem with all of this stuff is we get lost in the algorithm, or what we think works, or what the data tells us. But you can’t… this ineffable quality of human beings interacting with other human beings, that’s a special chemistry. It may not be nice. It may be unpleasant. But it has a certain electricity to it. And I think that that’s just all over Thunderbolts. And I’m so happy that Jake, the director, was so intent on capturing that. So intent on preserving that, and made that a priority. I was like, ‘Oof, this is good.’

Key characters from the “Thunderbolts” ensemble also include Julia Louis-Dreyfus portraying Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Lewis Pullman as Bob/Sentry, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. Additionally, Wendell Pierce and Chris Bauer are part of the cast in unspecified roles. Earlier reports suggested that Harrison Ford might reprise Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the film; however, recent news is conflicting on this matter. To catch up on Alexei and Yelena’s MCU debut, you can stream “Black Widow” using a Disney+ subscription.

On May 2, 2025, exactly three months following the premiere of “Captain America: Brave New World,” Thunderbolts makes its debut on the big screen. Moreover, from December 5 onwards, subscribers with Max will get a chance to listen to David Harbour’s portrayal of Frankenstein in “Creature Commandos.
