David Lynch’s Final Netflix Series: A Mysterious Masterpiece That Never Was

The departure of might have denied Hollywood one of its most remarkable and distinctive voices, yet the world nearly got one last glimpse of his brilliance through a limited series. After Lynch’s demise, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos disclosed that the director had presented a series concept to them which they eagerly embraced; however, unfortunately, this final grand project was destined not to materialize.

As a devoted admirer, I’ve been reflecting on the profound impact David Lynch has had on cinema over the years. His passing at 78 has left a void that can hardly be filled, with his legendary work still resonating deeply among fans. The recent surge in revisiting his masterpieces like Twin Peaks on streaming platforms such as Amazon and iTunes is a testament to his enduring influence.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, expressed his sorrow over Lynch’s demise, acknowledging that we won’t get the privilege of another brilliant work from a mind so uniquely gifted. On Instagram, he reminisced about the longstanding connection between Netflix and Lynch, tracing our relationship back to its origins.

During the early stages of my tenure at Netflix, when we were merely delivering DVDs across the U.S., I had an unforgettable encounter with one of my favorite filmmakers in his personal residence. We aimed to offer every movie on DVD, but a cherished film of mine, “Eraserhead,” was not commercially available. I contacted David and requested a meeting. At his dining table, we arranged for Netflix to purchase “Eraserhead” in bulk and produce a DVD compilation of all his groundbreaking short films.

Following his disclosure that their first encounter prompted Lynch to later share a three-hour unfinished version of Mulholland Drive with him, he proceeded to discuss the origins of the latest series concept.

David and I rarely interacted after that time, but many years down the line, David approached Netflix to propose a limited series. Intrigued, we eagerly took up the offer. This was a David Lynch production, brimming with enigma and daring elements, and we were excited to embark on this creative journey with such a talented individual. Unfortunately, first Covid-19 and then some health concerns prevented the project from being brought to life. However, we made it clear that as soon as he was ready, we would be fully committed.

Netflix Boss Celebrates the “Unapologetic Genius” of David Lynch.

Just like numerous others, Sarandos recognizes David Lynch’s uniqueness. Unlike most, he didn’t follow traditional paths in his work, whether it was through writing, directing, or acting. As the head of Netflix put it, interacting with Lynch was always “exciting,” and there remains a lingering curiosity about what his last project might have become.

The most recent conversation I had with David was just as captivating as our first. He visited my house accompanied by a friend and his muse, Laura Dern. We spent hours engaging in an incredible discussion spanning various topics such as projects, cinema, life, art, and even my windows (he admired them). David Lynch was an uncompromising genius. He didn’t aim to make his work comprehensible; instead, he knew it was beyond reach, and that was part of the intrigue. His body of work is truly remarkable, visionary, daring, and artistic. I can’t help but wonder about the potential directions for us in what would have been his final project.
