These productions delved into the sinister depths hidden beneath the surface of idealized American society, thereby initiating a unique cinematic genre. This exploration has left an indelible mark on countless artists, far beyond the confines of Hollywood. The focus of Mike Miley’s book, David Lynch’s American Dreamscape: Music, Literature, Cinema, is this very subject and it will be available on Bloomsbury Academic from February 6.

This 288-page book expands the ways we understand David Lynch’s films, suggesting fresh perspectives that move beyond just cinema and visual art. Instead, it invites us to consider how Lynch’s work connects with literary and musical works that have significantly influenced American culture. The academic study focuses on how artists like Grammy-nominated singer Lana Del Rey, the late David Foster Wallace, and others have incorporated Lynch’s distinctive cinematic style into their own projects. A trailer for this book was shared by the author on YouTube on January 8.

On Thursday morning, The Hollywood Reporter contacted Miley after news about Lynch’s passing. Recognizing that the release date had been scheduled months ago, he expressed his deep sadness for Lynch’s family and close collaborators who have lost a dear friend. He also found solace in considering the body of work Lynch left behind, which will continue to impact us as long as there is cinema. Somewhere around the globe tonight, someone will watch one of his films, and their perspective on cinema will be transformed, and their faith in its power will be reaffirmed.

Miley is a professor specializing in film studies at Loyola University New Orleans and also teaches literature at Metairie Park Country Day School. She has written two books, “Truth and Consequences: Game Shows in Fiction and Film” and “Conversations with Steve Erickson”. Her latest book, “American Dreamscape”, which she’s been working on since 2011, predates David Lynch’s announcement of his emphysema diagnosis last August. Miley explains to THR that this book originated from an article that eventually expanded into the chapter on Lynch’s 1990 film, “Wild at Heart”, starring Laura Dern and Nicholas Cage. Sections of the work were published in 2020, with the remaining parts completed during the pandemic.

He notes, “David Lynch’s work has been a consistent presence in my life since I was 5 years old, when I ran frightened from the theater during a screening of Dune. Unlike any other artist I’ve admired, Lynch is the one whose work never lost its appeal or felt outgrown. Instead, it has become even more captivating as I’ve delved deeper into it. His career serves as a remarkable example of how an artist can evolve and transform while staying uniquely themselves. His artistic style is instantly recognizable – we even have the term ‘Lynchian’ for it – yet it inspires others to develop their own distinctive style and dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to what he referred to as ‘The Art Life’. In both grand and subtle ways, his work has influenced many.

He didn’t always choose the financially rewarding route, but instead focused solely on his artistic vision. At times this meant working with limited resources and not much recognition for his projects. However, there were instances where the world came to him, like with ‘Twin Peaks’. Unlike many other American filmmakers, he gave equal importance to sound as image in his work, a trend now commonly seen in films. Alongside Martin Scorsese, he is recognized for using popular songs in dark narratives, a practice that has become widespread.

Beyond his artistic talents, he offers us an inspiring model of a person who viewed the world with awe and open-mindedness, inviting others to embrace this perspective as well.

Miley goes on by saying, “Lynch’s strength lies in his ability to tap into his subconscious and translate it onto film without second-guessing or overanalyzing it. This is why scholars and fans continue to explore his work – it unveils aspects of ourselves that we usually keep hidden from everyday life. If he approached ideas as we do, these films wouldn’t exist, and cinema would be poorer for it.”

Miley explains, “Lynch is exceptional because he can delve into his subconscious and create movies based on that exploration without overthinking or judging. His work captivates scholars and fans because it reveals parts of ourselves we normally keep concealed. If he processed ideas as we do, those films wouldn’t exist, and the world of cinema would be impoverished.

The upcoming title, unrelated to its subject matter, follows David Lynch’s latest musical endeavor titled “Cellophane Memories,” a collaboration with vocalist Chrystabell, who played Special Agent Tammy Preston in the third season of “Twin Peaks.” Notably, this 46-year-old artist’s debut album, “This Train,” was penned and produced by the late writer-director.
