On January 15, the entertainment industry experienced a significant setback due to the untimely demise of renowned filmmaker, David Lynch. Known for masterpieces such as “Twin Peaks” and “The Elephant Man,” he collaborated with many influential figures in the industry. However, one collaboration that eluded him was with an iconic figure from the ’80s and ’90s – Michael Jackson. Despite numerous attempts to make it happen, Lynch missed the chance to include Jackson, who transitioned into acting, in one of his productions.
During that period, Madonna made her mark in notable films like “A League Of Their Own,” demonstrating a decent acting ability as a singer. Yet, for some unknown reason, it wasn’t destined to happen, and despite any potential projects David Lynch might have envisioned, it never progressed beyond the planning stage.
In an interview with Empire, author Barry Gifford revealed some details about a potential film starring Madonna, which might have revolved around a woman working in a rural bar, dealing with conflicts involving the men she associated with. Additionally, there was another project concerning a battery that could last eternally. This seemed to be connected to aliens. However, due to Madonna’s recent shift away from acting and the passing of David Lynch, it appears unlikely that this outline will ever fully materialize into a role for the singer.
Lynch and I discussed numerous other projects, but unfortunately none of them materialized. There was one where Madonna was intended to take the lead role. This was following the film “Wild At Heart“; Monty Montgomery wanted us, David and myself, to create a script suitable for her.
Madonna’s Acting Isn’t For Everyone
Patti LuPone, a renowned figure on Broadway and star of “Agatha All Along”, is one of many big names in the industry who are firm opponents to the idea of Madonna getting involved in movie scripts. During her 2017 appearance on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen”, LuPone bluntly labeled Madonna as a “movie killer” and “lacking life”. There are several other stars who share similar sentiments about Madonna’s acting career.
Meryl Streep once told the New York Times that not only was she capable of singing better than acting if that mattered, but she could even outperform herself vocally. If Madonna had been given a chance to act in one of David Lynch’s projects, she might have changed her image as an inferior actor. However, since Madonna hasn’t acted in a live-action major film for two decades, it seems unlikely that she will completely change her reputation.
