DC Studios’ ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ Officially Begins Production

In approximately seven months, Superman is due to be released in cinemas, and as we approach that date, DC Studios is looking ahead to the future, with filming now underway for the second installment of the revamped franchise. The new Superman, portrayed by James Gunn, is set to take flight in theaters on July 11, 2025, with David Corenswet stepping into the role of Clark Kent. Alongside him, a host of well-known and overlooked DC Comics heroes will appear, including Guy Gardner (played by Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Additionally, Supergirl, played by Millie Alcock, will also be featured. The upcoming movie will pave the way for Alcock’s standalone film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which has recently made significant progress in the DC production schedule.

Filming is now underway for DC Studios’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with Craig Gillespie (noted for his work on Dumb Money, I, Tonya, and Lars and the Real Girl) at the helm. This epic production kicks off its extensive shooting schedule at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England. The script was written by Ana Nogueira who is also contributing to DC Studios’ upcoming Teen Titans film. Although specifics about the movie’s plot are limited, James Gunn has hinted that it will be a largely accurate portrayal of Tom King’s comic book series with the same name. The original comic book synopsis goes:

At a point where Supergirl is on the brink of exhaustion, an unexpected turn of events occurs. An alien girl emerges, urgently requesting assistance for a ruthless task. This girl’s homeworld has been annihilated, and those responsible for the destruction are yet to face justice. Seeking revenge, she warns that if Supergirl declines, she will carry out this mission regardless of the consequences.

In the past couple of weeks, we’ve been treated to another significant update regarding “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. On December 30, just prior to New Year’s Eve, Jason Momoa made an exciting announcement that has long been desired by DC fans – he will be bringing Lobo to life in the DCU, debuting in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. Alongside Alcock and Momoa in this film, we have Eve Ridley playing Ruthye (an alien girl), and Matthias Schoenaerts taking on the role of the movie’s enigmatic antagonist.

The DCU Is Off to a Great Start

In contrast to Superman launching the DCU on the silver screen, the new cinematographic series “Creature Commandos” ignited the franchise first, with its premiere receiving exceptional acclaim. The show captured the hearts of both fans and critics throughout its initial seven episodes, boasting a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In light of this success, it has been confirmed that “Creature Commandos” will return for a second season.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about upcoming DCU projects! If you thought James Gunn had his hands full, writing and directing ‘Superman’, penning ‘Creature Commandos’, and overseeing the creative direction of DC Studios, you were wrong. Somehow, he managed to squeeze in writing a second season of ‘Peacemaker’, starring John Cena as our beloved, foul-mouthed superhero. The new season is set to drop in August 2025!

While Season 1 was removed from the DCU timeline when Gunn and Peter Safran took over, Season 2 promises to be an integral part of the universe. Now, here’s something for those who prefer the big screen: ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ hits theaters on June 26, 2026! So, mark your calendars, fellow DC fans, as we gear up for some thrilling adventures ahead!
