DC’s Reliance on Batman is Why Marvel Games Are Currently Better

Due to the cancellation of Wonder Woman and the shutdown of Monolith Productions, Warner Bros. has announced a shift in their game development strategy, focusing exclusively on DC Comics, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat properties. However, given their history, it seems quite amusing that they would list “DC” as one of the areas of focus, considering the company’s apparent dedication to a single character: Batman.

Despite our fondness for The Dark Knight at Gfinity, it’s been disheartening to see DC devote so much of its creative energy solely towards this character and his associates. Fans had high hopes that the Wonder Woman game would shake things up, but it seems Warner Bros. may not be ready to take any major risks for now.

As a devoted fan, I must say that Marvel Rivals stands out remarkably as an adored hero shooter, introducing characters such as Squirrel Girl, Luna Snow, and even the unconventional Jeff the Shark to the casual gaming community. The fact that lesser-known heroes like Luna Snow and Jeff are gaining traction with mainstream audiences is a testament to the game’s success.

Essentially, DC tends to overemphasize Batman in its productions, whereas Marvel allows other characters to take center stage and generate revenue. Following Arkham Knight, DC chose to expand their gaming portfolio by offering two Batman-related titles, but without featuring Batman himself.

In a different world, Gotham Knights was established, where the main character actually perished. The game allows players to assume control over Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood. On the surface, this game seemed promising, but the emphasis on cooperative play made playing through the campaign individually more challenging than anticipated.

Is it necessary to bring up Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? It appears that this game was placed within the Arkham universe, offered a live-service approach, and handled these iconic characters poorly. A better choice might have been setting it in a different universe, but they chose to use a well-liked version of these characters instead. The demise of Kevin Conroy was an unfortunate occurrence that made his character’s “death” in this game feel even more disrespectful, regardless of whose fault it is.

Marvel has experienced its share of missteps and questionable gaming decisions. For instance, The Avengers experimented with live-service gaming, ultimately leading to it being removed from sale. Furthermore, Marvel decided not to include X-Men and Fantastic Four characters in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, resulting in a relatively small roster that lacked popular choices. However, the Beyond mod did enhance the game significantly; nevertheless, the absence of those mutants was noticeable.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that Marvel doesn’t play favorites lightly. Insomniac didn’t just whip up Marvel’s Spider-Man out of nowhere; it’s an iconic character and starting a new franchise with lesser-known characters like the Inhumans wouldn’t have had the same impact.

But Miles Morales, a relatively fresh face in the Marvel universe, got his own spin-off game due to the popularity of the original. And guess what? Miles is set to take the lead in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, but don’t worry, Peter Parker isn’t retiring just yet!

It’s important to mention that the company didn’t limit themselves to only a few Marvel characters. Instead, they provided us with an enjoyable game like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 for Nintendo Switch, which offers a thrilling button-mashing experience with a delightful blend of mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes and lesser-known comic book characters. Moreover, games centered around Iron Man, Black Panther, and Captain America are planned to release in the near future.

Despite not being financially profitable, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy capitalized on the lessons gleaned from The Avengers and offered an immersive single-player adventure. This game was daring, with players controlling solely Star-Lord in a captivating third-person shooter narrative, replete with choices that added depth to the gameplay. Although the storyline remained largely consistent, the abundant dialogue and writing demonstrated a remarkable dedication from the development team.

Ultimately, we have Marvel Rivals on our hands. Frankly, its stellar character designs and engaging gameplay speak volumes. Its microtransactions are reasonably priced, making it an ideal choice for a hero shooter. Unfortunately, they’ve been affected by layoffs, which is unfortunately common in the gaming industry nowadays.

DC ought to re-evaluate its approach and examine the factors contributing to Marvel’s popularity, particularly in the gaming realm. James Gunn seems to have learned from the DCEU’s blunders, as Superman appears more appealing so far. Yet, they might benefit from emulating Marvel by creating games beyond Batman. frankly, an Injustice 3 or a Justice League game could be delightful and welcomed by many fans.
