DCU’s ‘The Brave and the Bold’ Facing Delays According to Director

As a long-time DC fan, I must admit that the current state of the DC Universe has me both excited and slightly anxious. On one hand, we have James Gunn’s promising initiatives like “Superman” and “Creature Commandos,” which are shaping up to be fantastic additions to the DC canon. On the other hand, the delay in Andy Muschietti’s “The Brave and the Bold” feels a bit like Batman himself – always lurking in the shadows, never quite making an appearance when we want him to.

James Gunn’s DC Universe is gradually coming to life through his animated series “Creature Commandos” and the upcoming standalone “Superman” film, but one iconic character from the Bat-family seems to be missing from our screens so far. Announced in early 2023, Andy Muschietti will direct “The Brave and the Bold,” the first official project of the rebooted DC Universe that focuses on “Batman” and, as hinted by its title, Robin (Damian Wayne). This much-awaited film, distinct from Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” series, has been quiet in terms of development updates until recently. However, there have been some new developments in the case now.

In an interview on the California Secreta podcast (via EverythingDCU), Andy Muschietti spoke about his future projects following his work on The Flash and It for Warner Bros. Although he hinted that his next project could be a long-developing, personal sci-fi movie, it appears fans may have to wait longer for a new Batman film. DC Studios has been working on The Brave and the Bold since its announcement some years ago, but according to Muschietti, “The Batman project has been pushed back slightly, so I might work on another film first.” It remains undisclosed why the project has been delayed, but this update aligns with Gunn’s recent disclosure that a script still hasn’t been completed for the Batman and Robin-focused movie.

In a surprising twist, the initial unveiling of the new Batman was shown in an apocalyptic scenario by Creature Commandos. However, this version differed significantly from what fans anticipated his debut in the DC Universe would be like. The series The Brave and the Bold is yet to provide the true portrayal of the Dark Knight, with hints suggesting it will delve into the more supernatural elements of the original content compared to Reeves’ gritty crime drama. Regardless, there are compelling arguments that the DCU might thrive without Batman as the main character for now, given the delays in his appearance.

The DCU is Already Off to a Promising Start

Due to an extraordinary trailer premiere, James Gunn’s Superman has sparked great anticipation among audiences for the grand unveiling of the revamped DC Universe. Although Max’s Creature Commandos has been applauded by critics and recently secured a Season 2 renewal, the success or failure of Superman could significantly influence the new cinematic universe in a genre that appears to be waning in relevance within pop culture. As DC Studios prepares for a grand entrance with their solo Kryptonian film, their upcoming projects (with the exception of The Brave and the Bold) have gained momentum recently.

After the live-action Superman movie, the following project is a film titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” This isn’t a planned Kryptonian connection in the early days of the DC Universe, as Gunn has revealed. The film was rushed into production due to the impressive quality of the script. At DC Studios, they only greenlight projects when the screenplays are completely ready for shooting. Filming for Supergirl begins early next year with a summer 2026 release, while Clayface, penned by horror master Mike Flanagan, is set to hit theaters before The Batman Part II.
