De Niro’s Worst Movie Yet: ‘The Alto Knights’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed

In Barry Levinson’s film titled “The Alto Knights“, Robert De Niro portrays not one but two gang leaders. One might expect such a role to be a crowd-pleaser, especially for fans and critics who have been following De Niro since his days in “Mean Streets“, but alas, this isn’t the case. Instead, “The Alto Knights” has made a disappointing splash on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting that it might be best to pass on watching it in theaters this weekend.

With a meager 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Canadian critic Richard Crouse remarks that “The Alto Knights” is stylishly made with authentic period details. However, its superficial exploration of the protagonists’ relationships and a monotonous, dragging script diminishes the impact of the narrative. Odie Henderson from The Boston Globe further comments:

Instead of serving repetitive storytelling and manipulative directorial techniques reminiscent of Scorsese’s work, we’re often left with a noticeably unenthused Robert De Niro. He barely delivers a single convincing act, far from the expectation of two distinct performances.

In the 1950s, the movie “The Alto Knights” features Robert De Niro playing two real-life brothers, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. A power struggle between the two escalates into an open conflict when Vito orders a hit on Frank. To protect himself, his family, and plan his exit from the Mafia, Frank takes countermeasures. The film also stars Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, Kathrine Narducci, and Michael Rispoli. With a production budget of $45 million, it is estimated to earn between $2–3 million dollars this weekend across 2,800 theaters.
