De Tomaso Automobili Reveals Production-Spec P72

Summary

  • De Tomaso has revealed the production-spec P72, a retro-inspired supercar powered by a 700 hp supercharged 5L V8
  • Built on a carbon monocoque chassis, the P72 features push-rod suspension, no digital screens and an exposed metal shift linkage for a purist driving experience
  • Only 72 examples will be built, with deliveries starting in late 2025; each car will be individually commissioned and hand-finished

The P72, a tribute to ’60s racing design and mechanical simplicity, has been revealed in its production form by De Tomaso. This car is inspired by the 1965 collaboration between De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby, the original P70. The P72 captures the emotional spirit of a bygone era, reimagined with contemporary skill.

Initially unveiled at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the P72 is now ready in its final production version, constructed on a single-piece carbon fiber monocoque woven seamlessly. Each component of this platform, from its suspension utilizing push rods to its low-positioned engine, has been meticulously designed and developed to ensure perfect balance and a direct, analog driving feel.

Beneath its exterior resides a manually constructed 5-liter supercharged V8 engine, generating an impressive 700 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain is coupled with a traditional six-speed manual transmission and visible metal shift linkage. There are no driving modes, digital displays, or technological distractions in this vehicle; instead, it offers a direct, tactile bond between the driver and the car itself.

Within, the cabin exudes traditional charm, featuring custom-stitched leather, finely crafted aluminum controls, and unique mechanical elements. A mere 72 of these masterpieces will be produced, each one tailor-made and slated for delivery towards the end of 2025.
