As a seasoned gamer and Marvel fanatic who’s logged countless hours in the virtual world of superheroes, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that we never got to witness Deadpool and Wolverine taking on the original Avengers. The idea of seeing Deadpool verbally dismantling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in his signature sarcastic style is something I would have eagerly paid to see on the big screen.
For two weeks now, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the 2024 release of Deadpool and Wolverine’s next adventure, and it seems that tidbits about some of Deadpool 3’s shocking cameos have finally started to surface. Moreover, there’s been a flood of information about concepts that didn’t quite make it into the final cut, such as why the characters from the 2015 Fantastic Four movie didn’t show up in the trilogy and the possibility of Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Tony Stark. Recently, a fascinating revelation has emerged: Deadpool and Wolverine were initially intended to square off against the original Avengers! And guess who was supposed to lift Mjolnir during that scene? An intriguing choice indeed.
How The Avengers Would Have Fit Into Deadpool And Wolverine
In the film “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which is the 34th Marvel movie in chronological order, Ryan Reynolds’ character Wade Wilson is depicted using Cable’s time-travel device from “Deadpool 2” to arrive in the main MCU universe (Earth-616) in 2018. His aim was to join the Avengers. Happy Hogan conducted the interview for the job, and he determined that Deadpool wasn’t suitable to be part of the superhero team. Wade accepted the rejection fairly, but according to Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, co-writers, he could have reacted less gracefully if denied membership in the Avengers when speaking with Indiewire.
“In truth, we’ve kept this under wraps, but there existed an early draft of the scene where all the Avengers were present, although it wasn’t scripted, just envisioned. In that scene, Deadpool was turned down and then he scolded the Avengers in a manner only Deadpool can.”
“He was about to reveal something sensational, which would likely lead him to harshly criticize and even aggressively lash out at everyone involved.”
It’s unlikely that Deadpool would immediately resort to violence after a bad interview with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Instead, he probably would have used his signature wit and humor, taking jabs at characters like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and more on his way out. Many of these jokes would have broken the fourth wall. It seems challenging to gather the original six Avengers actors for a cameo in the Deadpool and Wolverine set, so I can understand why only Happy Hogan was featured.
The Deadpool Character Who Would Have Picked Up Thor’s Hammer
In the imagined Avengers gathering, Deadpool (Wade Wilson) attempts to lift Thor’s hammer while departing from their headquarters. It’s not surprising that Wade isn’t worthy of Mjolnir’s power, but Peter, portrayed by Rob Delaney in this scenario, would have been chosen. The writers clarify this distinction.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share this intriguing moment. I believe that Rob Delaney, or rather Peter, was present. And in an almost casual manner, it seemed as though he nonchalantly lifted Mjolnir, Thor’s mighty hammer.
As a die-hard fan, here’s my take: “Oh, yes! It slipped my mind that Peter casually grabbed Thor’s Hammer in the background – that was the gag. You’re spot on! Initially, he was there with Captain America. I don’t recall specific script pages, but it was part of the scene concept. I vaguely remember suggesting he’d try to get Captain America to swear. The rest of the details are hazy, but yes, he was going to scold them both.”
In the movie Deadpool 2, Peter was presented as the only ordinary member of X-Force, though his dual diagnosis of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes might be seen as an unusual power. Unfortunately, during a confrontation with Zeitgeist, Peter met a tragic end when he was caught in a wood chipper and Zeitgeist accidentally sprayed acidic vomit on the team. However, in the Deadpool 2 post-credits scene, Wade utilized Cable’s time travel gadget to resurrect Peter, although it seemed that no one else from X-Force was saved (it’s peculiar how Shatterstar appeared alive again in Deadpool & Wolverine).
Since Peter, also known as Peterpool, has now become Wade’s closest friend replacing Weasel, it’s only natural that he would join him for the Avengers interview. What intrigues me more is how the writers subtly portrayed Peter’s ability to lift Mjolnir casually in the background instead of making a big deal out of it, creating a comical contrast compared to when Captain America summoned Mjolnir in Avengers: Endgame. This is both smart and amusing storytelling.
As a die-hard fan, I regret to share that a captivating scene featuring Deadpool and Wolverine never progressed past its initial stages. However, fear not! Some of the scenes deemed fantastic enough for Marvel cinema can be savored in theaters now.
