Deadpool And Wolverine Originally Wanted Nic Cage's Ghost Rider, And There's Even Concept Art

As a fan who’s been following Marvel since the early days of Nick Fury’s one-eyed glances and Robert Downey Jr.’s quippy Iron Man, I must say, my heart skipped a beat when I saw that concept art of Nic Cage’s Ghost Rider and Ben Affleck’s Daredevil alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. The idea of these pre-MCU superheroes reprising their roles was as thrilling as the time I accidentally drank a full bottle of Captain America’s super soldier serum instead of my protein shake.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps expanding, with fresh content premiering in theaters and on Disney+. The latest blockbuster to hit the big screen is Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which shattered box office records. Interestingly, “Deadpool 3” initially aimed to feature Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider, a role that could potentially return based on concept art.

Fans who have spent years watching the Marvel movies in order recall a slew of pre-MCU blockbusters that arrived in theaters in the early aughts. That includes Cage’s pair of Ghost Rider films, with some moviegoers still hoping he’ll appear in upcoming Marvel movies. Some concept art from Deadpool 3 just arrived on Instagram, featuring both that character and Ben Affleck’s Daredevil in the mix. Check it out below:

Boy oh boy, I sure wish I could have been there for the spectacle! It would have been absolutely incredible if two more actors who played superheroes before the Marvel Cinematic Universe era were to reprise their roles and join the Deadpool Corps. The climactic Deadpool and Wolverine fight was reserved for the title characters, while the Void’s Resistance assisted in battling Cassandra Nova’s forces. In the end, fans enjoyed the return of Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, Dafne Keen, and even a shocking appearance by Channing Tatum as Gambit.

As a gamer speaking, I couldn’t help but wonder why Nicolas Cage and Ben Affleck didn’t join the cast of Deadpool 3 as Ghost Rider and Daredevil respectively. Ryan Reynolds spilled the beans to Entertainment Weekly about this, explaining that the budget played a significant role in limiting the number of cameos in the film. In his own words: “The budget was the ghost in the machine that haunted our plans for an extensive roster of guest stars.

Initially, we had several preliminary versions of that sequence. However, as things progressed, we found ourselves scrutinizing…We aim to produce the movie thoughtfully, considering its substantial budget. In fact, it boasts the largest budget among all Deadpool films. Yet, we strive to limit our resources to foster an environment conducive to unconventional thinking and creativity. Excessive time or money often stifles such creativity, so yes, we’re streamlining certain aspects of production.

One way to rephrase that in a more natural and easy-to-read manner is: A significant factor contributing to the success of the Deadpool series was that the initial films were made on a budget significantly lower than other superhero movies. The upcoming project featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, however, would have been costlier due to the involvement of actors like Nicolas Cage and Ben Affleck, who likely would have demanded high salaries for their appearances. Unfortunately, this collaboration never materialized. During the same interview, Reynolds also discussed our near miss with a Ghost Rider film.

But we did talk to Nic Cage. We tried to get him, but he was a no-go…. I would’ve loved him.

It’s unfortunate not having Nicholas Cage reprise his role as Ghost Rider in that movie, especially considering Deadpool and Wolverine had numerous exciting guest appearances throughout, such as Chris Evans portraying a profane Human Torch instead of Captain America. However, it could have added an extra layer of excitement to the film.

Upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, titled “Captain America: A New World“, will be released in theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. In the meantime, here are the scheduled release dates for movies in 2025.
