Deadpool & Wolverine Fan Theory Explains the X-Mens Absence from the MCU

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and impatience at the prospect of seeing the X-Men finally join the MCU. Growing up with Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and the rest of the X-Men was a significant part of my childhood, and their absence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a glaring omission.

In an exciting turn of events, Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, could potentially expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) significantly by reintroducing characters like Wolverine from the X-Men universe. The much-anticipated arrival of Wolverine, along with Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four, has sparked excitement among fans, who eagerly await the inclusion of the X-Men, a group that has long provided enjoyable entertainment within the MCU.

Despite initial assumptions that Hugh Jackman’s last Marvel film would be “Logan,” where his character met its end, the films “Deadpool 2” and “Wolverine” brought him back to reprise the role (let’s hope it won’t be until he’s 90). In a similar vein, there are numerous theories circulating that the X-Men might not be too far from making an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One such theory, which particularly piqued our curiosity, is…

Fan Theory Suggests Wolverine Is the Reason for X-Men’s Absence in the MCU

The film Deadpool & Wolverine offers some insight into the X-Men’s absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet fails to clarify why they aren’t present now. Instead, it predominantly emphasizes the relationship between Wade and Logan, while delving slightly into their individual histories. In this context, the movie’s portrayal of Logan seems to have betrayed his entire universe in the eyes of the TVA, earning him the title of the worst Wolverine across all realities. It stands to reason that there should be a compelling explanation behind his dismal reputation, doesn’t it?

Initially in the movie, Hugh Jackman’s character Wolverine is depicted as a troubled alcoholic who avoids distractions and seeks solace in drinking to numb his sorrows. However, things take a turn at the end. Given the vague backstory, numerous fan theories have emerged, one of which seems particularly plausible. As proposed by Reddit user yoyofro25, There’s a theory that Wolverine might have been forced to kill the X-Men by someone like Cassandra Nova. Although this conflicts with what the latest MCU film suggests, it could be that there’s a hidden storyline that we haven’t discovered yet.

In the flick Deadpool & Wolverine, when Wolverine lastly crosses paths with X-23 for a heart-to-heart chat, he lays it all out. As he sees it, ol’ Wolverine never wanted to be an X-Man, but while he was off on his own adventures, mutant hunters wiped out the X-Men, leaving him with a lifetime of remorse. From Logan’s point of view, if he hadn’t ventured off by himself, he could have saved them. The movie suggests that he missed his chance to mend his world. However, it’s worth noting that in the comics, Wolverine has been implicated in the X-Men’s massacre on more than one occasion, a good chunk of which was due to external factors influencing him.

Other Interesting Theories That Make Sense

Could it be possible that Cassandra Nova, who we previously suggested could have influenced Wolverine, is instead the one orchestrating the vanishing of X-Men from the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Although she was banished to another realm at a young age, Cassandra might have obtained Doctor Strange’s Sling Ring, enabling her to traverse effortlessly through various universes.

It’s quite likely that Cassandra manipulated Wolverine into slaughtering the X-Men, making him think mutant hunters were responsible instead. This is feasible given that she employed individuals like Juggernaut and Sabretooth, who had a history of antagonism towards the current X-Men members.

In some adaptations of Old Man Logan comics, Mysterio deceives Wolverine into thinking he’s protecting mutants by killing them instead. This deception sheds light on Wolverine’s behavior and potential role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, it’s likely that the X-Men will eventually make an appearance in the MCU, but not for several years.

How the X-Men Could Still Appear in the MCU

Prior to the creation of the Multiverse theory, there would have been limited opportunities for X-Men to appear within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, with the release of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” though it might not have been a strong addition to the franchise, it opened up numerous avenues for any Marvel character to gain significance. Consequently, the multiversal encounters depicted in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “The Marvels” could potentially lead to the introduction of the X-Men.

For instance, the X-Men’s Earth may collide with Earth-616, destroying their world and forcing the mutants to reside in the main MCU world. While this seems like the most reasonable approach to introducing the X-Men to the MCU, there is a different possibility. A new X-Men stand-alone film is now in development, featuring new cast members who may play similar roles in the MCU once they are introduced. However, the film may take at least a couple of years before it is released, so we shouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon.

Just as the popular duo of Deadpool and Wolverine sets a high bar, Marvel needs to up its game to make the X-Men’s addition to their ongoing cinematic universe more enticing. Fingers crossed that “Avengers: Secret Wars,” slated for release soon, will mark the beginning of the long-desired integration of the X-Men, along with Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom. Don’t forget to catch Deadpool and Wolverine on Disney+ from November 12.
