As a seasoned movie critic with a lifelong love for superhero films and a soft spot for offbeat humor, I must admit that the box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine has left me utterly astounded and pleasantly amused. The film’s record-breaking performance has not only solidified its place in cinema history but also provided an unexpected chuckle or two along the way.

Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine has surpassed Cinematic Jesus in North American box office earnings. In just its second weekend, it accumulated $97 million, bringing its domestic total to a staggering $395.6 million. This makes it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time in North America, eclipsing the longstanding record set by The Passion of the Christ, a Biblical epic about Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Remarkably, Mel Gibson’s film held this record for 20 years before being overtaken.

Reynolds gave a completely expected comical reply when asked by Collider if he ever thought he would beat Jesus at the box office. He said:

“Wow, it seems you’ve placed us in a tricky cultural predicament that could potentially harm our professional reputations. Quite the start, Frosty, I must say. Don’t you remember in Deadpool 2 when I joked about outperforming The Passion of the Christ in countries where religion isn’t as prevalent? They didn’t understand me then, they won’t get me now.”

The highly anticipated collaboration between two renowned Marvel actors, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, in the MCU, has amassed over $824 million globally, ranking it third among R-rated films. With its current momentum, it could potentially surpass the two movies ahead of it – “Oppenheimer” (currently at #2 with $975.3 million) and “Joker” (at #1 with $1.1 billion).

The movie debuted in 4,230 cinemas on July 26th, earning a remarkable $211.4 million during its opening weekend. This breakthrough performance set new records as the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film and also became the highest-grossing summer movie opening weekend of all time. Just ten days after its release, it ranks at number 48 on the list of top-earning domestic films of all time (these figures are from Box Office Mojo and have not been adjusted for inflation).

In only ten days, the earnings of Deadpool & Wolverine are truly astounding when contrasted with the entire theatrical run of The Passion of the Christ, a groundbreaking independent R-rated film that stunned Hollywood in 2004. Directed by Academy Award winner Mel Gibson (Braveheart) and featuring Jim Caviezel (Person of Interest) as Jesus, The Passion opened in February 2004 across 3,400 theaters with a staggering $84 million opening weekend. This film demonstrated staying power, attracting audiences throughout the summer before wrapping up with $370 million in domestic sales and $611 million globally. The box office success of an R-rated film had never been equaled until this year.

The performers have commemorated the movie’s achievement in various manners. Jackman and Reynolds have been quite active on social media platforms for the past ten days following its debut. After another prosperous weekend at the box office, Reynolds expressed gratitude towards fans via Instagram, publishing an emotional message that looked back on the previous decade of films. In his post, he mentioned, “Ten years ago, we would have joyfully accepted these EXTRAORDINARY second weekend figures as our opening weekend numbers.” He further added, “The way Deadpool and Wolverine have encapsulated this moment is hard to grasp. It almost feels like it’s happening to someone else. Nonetheless, making these films has been more enjoyable than anyone should be allowed to experience.”

Hugh Jackman has expressed his gratitude multiple times for returning to play Wolverine. Following the movie’s successful opening weekend, he remade a popular meme inspired by the ’90s X-Men animated series, replacing it with a picture of himself to create a timeless representation.

Jennifer Garner rejoiced over her brief appearance by uploading an Instagram video showcasing her workout routine to get back in shape for reprising the role of Elektra, a part she last played almost 20 years ago. Chris Evans acknowledged his cameo as Johnny Storm, a member of Fantastic Four, on Instagram with some behind-the-scenes photos. In his post, he expressed that playing Johnny once more was a long-held dream and the character will forever hold a special place in his heart.
