Deadpool & Wolverine Offered Azazel Role to X-Men: First Class Actor

Deadpool & Wolverine Offered Azazel Role to X-Men: First Class Actor

As a longtime fan and follower of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment upon learning about Jason Flemyng’s decision to not reprise his role as Azazel in Deadpool & Wolverine. Having been captivated by the intense portrayal of this villain in X-Men: First Class, it would have been exhilarating to see him return in a more significant capacity in the MCU.

In the film, Deadpool and Wolverine showcased a variety of thrilling appearances by Marvel characters, yet they were unable to persuade an actor from X-Men: First Class to reenact his villain character in the MCU sequel. Leading stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman directed a multiverse adventure, featuring the comeback of beloved figures like Blade, portrayed by Wesley Snipes, and the screen debut of Channing Tatum as Gambit. However, some initial actors did not make the final cast. Specifically, Jason Flemyng, who played Azazel in X-Men: First Class, declined Marvel Studios’ invitation to reappear in Deadpool & Wolverine.

During an interview with Comicbookmovie.com about his upcoming film The Stoic, Flemyng shared that, much like other actors from the old Marvel-Fox universe, he was given a chance to be in Deadpool & Wolverine. His character Azazel in First Class served as a secondary villain to Kevin Bacon’s Sebastian Shaw. In the comics, Azazel is Nightcrawler’s father, although this wasn’t explored in the film series. According to Flemyng, who had to wear prosthetics and heavy makeup previously, the idea of putting on the costume again for a role focused mostly on stunts didn’t sound enjoyable to him.

In simpler terms, the situation was identical. The same events unfolded where they approached us and asked if we were interested in participating in a three-day fight sequence followed by two days of makeup tests. Essentially, they wanted us to act as stunt performers. However, at that moment, I didn’t require a few thousand dollars, so I declined, suggesting that a stuntman would do a better job and handle it well. It turned out to be beneficial for me since people often comment on my appearance in Deadpool, another big movie. If I manage to get a few autographs at Comic-Con due to my role in Deadpool, I’ll consider it a bonus [Laughs].

According to what’s been stated, Vinnie Jones, who played Juggernaut, turned down a likely underpaid opportunity to make a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, which involved participating in a significant battle sequence during the second act. Frankly, it’s tough not to understand their decision. While cameos can be exciting for dedicated fans, the roles lack enough substance for seasoned actors to truly excel. Regrettably, outside of Deadpool’s main team composed of Marvel-Fox superheroes, there isn’t much room to substantially develop villain characters in a significant way. However, it seems that Flemyng might still enjoy the financial rewards of his character’s appearance in the MCU while attending Comic-Con.

Deadpool & Wolverine Didn’t Bring Back a Lot of Actors

Actors playing X-Men characters other than Flemyng and Jones also missed out on the opportunity to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, even though their characters were brought back in the MCU film. Characters from earlier Fox-Marvel films like Lady Deathstrike, Toad, Pyro, and Sabretooth made appearances, but only the original actors for Toad and Sabretooth reprised their roles, providing voice lines in the movie. Regrettably, Kelly Hu (as Lady Deathstrike) and Ray Park (as Toad) were not part of the cast. It appears that Deadpool & Wolverine may have been short on time to offer more significant roles, which might have influenced other actors to return.

Before the movie started filming, it was widely known that Deadpool and Wolverine had numerous concepts in development, showcasing various incarnations of these Marvel characters seen in the sequel. Ranging from multiple Wolverine alter-egos to additional Deadpool personas, the creative team had a wealth of ideas left unrealized during production. It appears that some of these characters and actors were not included due to budget constraints, particularly since Wolverine’s brown and tan suit reportedly cost $100,000 for just a 10-second scene.
