It’s generally accurate to say that people were greatly fond of the duo, Deadpool and Wolverine. In the year 2024, this live-action film became the highest-earning movie of the year, not only in domestic markets but globally, raking in more than a billion dollars. The audience adored seeing their favorite superhero characters from earlier Marvel productions before the MCU, but there was one character who wasn’t present, and Deadpool’s co-creator, Rob Liefeld, believes that the recent film made a significant error by omitting him.
Apart from the various guest appearances and side characters seen in the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine”, many actors from the two preceding “Deadpool” films made an appearance, albeit in minor roles. Interestingly, comic book creator Rob Liefeld believes that a character from “Deadpool 2” should have been included in the latest film, as Josh Brolin’s Cable was conspicuously absent. In response to recent speculation about Brolin potentially joining the DC Universe on Twitter, Liefeld expressed…
Shouldn’t have blocked him from Deadpool & Wolverine. All time boner move.
In my opinion, “all-time” might be a bit too broad, but Deadpool & Wolverine performed remarkably well as it stood. I concur with Liefeld that excluding Josh Brolin was a notable error. The character of Cable proved to be an outstanding addition in Deadpool 2. Besides the quick Deadpool mention about tampering with time travel in the latest film, there’s minimal connection made to the events from the second movie.
Bringing Cable back wouldn’t have seemed unusual considering that almost every other superhero from a comic book, including those whose movies didn’t come out, were included in the film.
I’d gladly argue that it wouldn’t have been necessary for Josh Brolin to reprise his exact role as Cable from “Deadpool 2”. Instead, he could have effortlessly portrayed an alternate version of the character that Deadpool and Wolverine encountered in the TVA wasteland. This could have been a minor role or a fleeting appearance if Brolin’s schedule didn’t allow for a more substantial part.
It’s understandable if it seemed that Deadpool would be the only X-Men character appearing in the MCU, given that new actors will likely play the official X-Men when they eventually appear in Marvel films. However, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Kelsey Grammar’s Beast were indeed part of the movie and its title, with Beast even making a cameo in the post-credits scene of “The Marvels”.
It’s plausible that the reason for this casting choice could be because Brolin has previously appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thanos. Since Thanos is deceased, having Brolin reprise his role might have provided additional humor, given the joke about him playing two roles in Deadpool 2. This could have made the new film even more entertaining due to this fun connection.
Reflecting on the extensive time and effort spent on assembling the cast for Deadpool & Wolverine, excluding Josh Brolin from the project seems like a notable missed chance in terms of talent.
