Deepika Padukone opens up about struggle with depression; recalls telling her mother ‘Mujhe jeena hi nahi hai’

Deepika Padukone has never shied away from discussing her battle with depression. She consistently advocates for mental health and even runs the Live Love Laugh Foundation, which assists those in need. In a recent episode of Pariksha Pe Charcha 2025, she candidly shared her experiences. During this conversation, the actress recounted telling her mother that she no longer wished to live.

During the Pariksha Pe Charcha session, streamed on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s YouTube channel, Deepika Padukone spoke openly about a time when she recognized she was struggling with depression. After completing school, she immersed herself in sports, modeling, and acting. The actress reminisced about a particularly distressing episode in 2014, when she fainted. It wasn’t until a few days later that she learned she had been dealing with depression.

Deepika pointed out that depression is often invisible to the eye. She noted that there could be individuals in our midst who are battling it, yet they wear a smile.

Deepika Padukone explained that she kept her situation private for quite some time since she resided independently. On the day her mother left for Bengaluru, the actress admitted to breaking down before she went.

Deepika explained to her mother that she had no idea about the situation, but was feeling utterly powerless and devoid of hope. She also shared that she no longer wished to live.

Deepika considered herself fortunate since her mother recognized her distress and opted to consult a psychologist. In conclusion, she urged everyone to openly discuss their mental health concerns, explaining that doing so can alleviate stress.

11th of February saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi praising Deepika Padukone for her dedication towards mental health issues. On his Instagram story, he highlighted that the subject of mental health and wellness is often brought up by students (referred to as #Exam Warriors) in discussions. He also announced that this year’s Pariksha Pe Charcha would feature a special episode dedicated to this topic, which was scheduled for February 12th.

I’m thrilled to mention that we have Deepika Padukone, a deeply committed individual on this topic, ready to share her insights with us.
