As a longtime fan who has grown up alongside Demi Lovato, I am absolutely thrilled to see her taking charge and using her platform for such a meaningful project. Having witnessed her own journey through the highs and lows of fame as a child star, it’s heartening to see her shine a light on this important topic and bring together an impressive lineup of fellow alumni to share their experiences.
Demi Lovato is returning to the Disney orbit.
A well-known former television star is stepping into the directorial role for the first time with an intriguing documentary on Hulu. Notably, Hulu is part of the same business that catapulted Demi Lovato’s stardom in the past. The film, named “Child Star“, delves into the extraordinary ups and downs experienced by those who grow up under the limelight. Unlike previous documentaries about Lovato, this one will not just focus on her personal story but will also include poignant and at times emotional discussions with other former child stars such as Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson, Christina Ricci, Raven-Symoné, JoJo Siwa, and Alyson Stoner, who was Lovato’s co-star in “Camp Rock“. The movie, slightly over 90 minutes long, is scheduled to premiere on September 17.
Demonstrating immense pride, Lovato expressed her excitement about launching into directing with this documentary that illuminates the intricacies of child stardom – an issue deeply meaningful to her. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, she acknowledged her gratitude towards our cast for their courage in revealing their personal stories and our contributors for generously imparting insights to advance the discourse. She aspires for viewers to grasp the struggles and pressures that young entertainers confront so we can work towards establishing a safer, more nurturing atmosphere for future generations of talents in the entertainment industry, social media, and beyond.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve always admired Nicola Marsh’s work, especially her role as co-director on Demi Lovato’s project. With a unique set of skills, having directed documentaries like “Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story” for Netflix, she brings an invaluable perspective to our favorite star’s story. What drew me to this particular subject was the intriguing glimpse it offers into navigating meteoric fame during childhood and the immense pressures that come with it. It may seem like a whirlwind of fun and glamour from afar, but in reality, it’s incredibly tough to develop one’s identity as a child while also being commodified at the same time.
As someone who has spent a considerable amount of time working in the entertainment industry, I must say that I am genuinely excited about the upcoming documentary “Child Star,” produced by OBB Media. Having worked with many celebrities and witnessed their struggles firsthand, I can appreciate the courage it takes for them to open up and share their stories.
“We’re deeply appreciative to Hulu for allowing us to share this project, and a heartfelt thanks goes out to all the young actors who contributed to it, helping us expose the mysteries of this world. Without their courage and faith in us, we wouldn’t have been able to narrate this tale,” stated Ratner, whose other works include the 2024 The Kid Laroi documentary titled Kids Are Growing Up and the Justin Bieber docuseries Seasons. “We’re lucky to have had a long-standing relationship with OBB, and we take great pride in being the producers for Demi’s directorial debut. Alongside Nicola Marsh, Demi has co-directed an exceptional film that highlights a significant issue. Our wish is that this film will inspire the future generation of artists navigating this ever-changing media industry.”
