As a fan who has grown up admiring Demi Moore‘s iconic roles and timeless beauty, it’s heartening to see her reflect on her experiences in Hollywood. Her honesty about feeling out of place during the heightened conversation surrounding her physical appearance is both relatable and disheartening, especially given her undeniable talent and charisma.
Demi Moore is looking back on the attention she got from her Charlie’s Angels 2 bikini scene.
During an interview with Michelle Yeoh for the publication of “Interview” magazine on Tuesday, she opened up about experiencing a sense of exclusion within the industry when discussing the heightened discourse surrounding her appearance.
In 2003, when Moore was 40 years old, she filmed the sequel to Charlie’s Angels, a role that brought her significant attention due to a memorable bikini scene. Reflecting on those days, she admitted she had trouble defining her identity amidst all the focus. Now, at the age of 61, Moore looks back on those times with a sense of self-discovery and reflection.
“In an interview, Moore shared, ‘I had starred in Charlie’s Angels, and there was much discussion centering on a particular scene where I wore a bikini. It was quite intense, with lots of comments about my appearance. Later, I realized that I didn’t seem to fit comfortably into the project. I didn’t feel out of place, but rather, I experienced a sense of, I’m not in my twenties anymore, I’m not even thirty, yet they didn’t see me as a mother-to-be.’ “
When Yeoh added the question that possibly arose, “Where do I fit in?”, Moore agreed.
“Yeah, where do I fit in? It was a time that felt, not dead, but flat,” she said.
Yeoh expressed her thoughts by saying: “In Hollywood, women of our age often face harsh realities. The roles or characters we find aren’t relatable anymore, usually portraying us as mothers or no longer considered sexy. But why can’t a woman in her 40s, 50s, or even 60s be seen as attractive? Fortunately, the mindset is shifting because people like you and me refuse to accept this status quo.”
“Moore stated, ‘Negative. I can’t recall if I’ve ever encountered such a restriction and simply moved past it without recognizing it.'”
Moreover, Moore commended Yeoh for her inspiring Oscar acceptance speech following her win at the Everything Everywhere All At Once ceremony, as she encouraged everyone by stating that we have the power to determine our own paths and identities.
Moore stated, “We don’t need to battle it; instead, we should hold faith that another path can be taken. For me, the intriguing aspect of the movie is that I embody a past vision and not the reality of now.”
In Coralie Fargeat’s horror movie “The Substance”, Charlize Theron takes on the lead role. This film received an impressive nine-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Within the movie, Theron portrays a renowned actress who has transitioned into hosting a popular daytime workout show, and she experiments with a drug rumored to produce a youthful, improved version of oneself. Margaret Qualley steps into the role of Theron’s younger alter ego in the story. The film includes explicit scenes featuring Theron and Qualley engaged in a brutal, nude fight, marked by bloodshed.
At a press event for the movie during the festival, Moore expressed that the character he played took him beyond his usual comfort level. He also pointed out that the graphic content was essential to convey the narrative’s message. Moore characterized the film as satirizing the traditional notion of an ideal woman from a male point of view.
Moore shared with Yeoh that upon reviewing the movie script, she found it exceptionally original to delve into the topic of aging, societal expectations, and the internalization of the male-idealized female image, a pressure women often unconsciously embrace.
She clarified, “Essentially, the story revolves around self-inflicted actions, which were powerfully depicted as physical actions. It illustrates how one can harm oneself through thought processes, attacking oneself and distorting reality. The important takeaway is that our actions towards ourselves are choices, and we have the ability to make better choices. For those who prefer a lighter interpretation, it’s simply an entertaining tale.”
