As a film enthusiast with a keen eye for off-screen tales, I must say that Denzel Washington‘s latest move has left me utterly amazed. The man who can bring Macrinus to life on the big screen is now, in real life, stepping into the pulpit as a minister! It seems that the sky truly is the limit for this remarkable actor.
Denzel Washington is known for delivering powerful performances in films like “The Equalizer” and potentially causing trouble as Macrinus in “Gladiator 2”. However, away from the limelight, he’s quite laid-back. He’s married with children, and when not acting, you might find him officiating a wedding or two. Interestingly, Washington has recently been ordained as a minister in a ceremony held at Kelly Temple in New York City.
Archbishop Christopher Bryant shared on Facebook about a heartwarming event: Minister Denzel Washington was ordained into the clergy on Saturday, December 21, in New York City, at the same church where he used to attend as a child. The service was led by Bishop James Pullings Jr. In his post, Bryant expressed joy over this significant moment when Denzel received his minister’s license in the Church of God in Christ.
The Academy Award-winning actor has remained silent on his latest position as a minister, but Bryant recently revealed some thoughts from Washington that he expressed when receiving his license and baptism. “I’ve waited long enough, but I’ve finally arrived,” he declared. “If God has done this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The possibilities are truly endless.” The renowned actor from American Gangster recently discussed the impact of religion in Hollywood, stating it is rarely discussed as it is “not trendy” or “attractive.” With his new role, he may now have an opportunity to spread the message of faith to others who might be searching for the same solace he’s discovered.
Denzel Washington “Gave It Up to God” at a Young Age
It’s no secret that Washington has always been a man of faith, and encountered God when he was in his 20s after visiting a church with his good friend Robert Townsend. Speaking with Esquire last month, the 69-year-old star recalled the moment he was asked if he wanted to be “saved,” calling it one of the most “powerful” experiences of his life.
“I’m thinking, I’m just gonna give it up to God today, whatever that means. And I got back there, and they were praying and telling it to us. I’m hallelujah-ing. I was just feeling. It felt like I was getting lifted up. It felt like my back was arched, and I had my eyes closed. Not that I was going up in the air, but—I can’t exactly describe it. And I was blabbering, and kept blabbering because I was filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Beyond being a Sunday churchgoer, Washington consistently demonstrates his beliefs through numerous acts of charity within the community. Apart from his anticipated role in Ridley Scott’s film “Gladiator II”, he will also collaborate once more with Spike Lee for the crime thriller titled “Highest 2 Lowest“, slated to premiere in theaters next year by A24 before streaming on Apple TV.
