Two-time Oscar laureate Denzel Washington remains unfazed by the absence of an additional Academy Award nod for his role in “Gladiator II” from receiving recognition.
In an extensive conversation with The New York Times that appeared last Saturday, Washington was inquired about his disappointment over not being nominated for an Oscar for Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sequel to Gladiator. To this, the actor responded: “I found myself grinning, thinking: Look at you. On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re performing in Othello on Broadway! Can you believe it?” He then jokingly remarked, “Oh dear, I am just so disheartened.”
In an interview with The New York Times published last Saturday, Washington was questioned about not receiving an Oscar nomination for his role in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel. He responded by laughing and saying, “Here I am, working on Othello on Broadway, and you’re asking me if I care about not getting an Oscar nomination? Are you kidding me?” Then he added playfully, “Oh, I feel so sad.
He went on to say, “You know, I’ve been here for quite a while now. I’m growing wiser, trying to speak less but comprehend more – and that’s quite thrilling.
Back in ’88, I proudly claimed the trophy for a game called Glory, and then again in 2002 with Training Day. Over the years, I’ve managed to rack up a total of ten nominations. People seemed to appreciate my acting, but unfortunately, our production only snagged one Academy nod – that was for costume design.
Previously, the actor sparked retirement rumors with his comment, “I don’t see many more films I’m excited about making.” Yet, it appears that Denzel Washington isn’t retiring anytime soon, as his upcoming project involves taking on the role of Othello in a Broadway production alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
Washington also discussed his collaboration with his upcoming co-star: “He’s a little crazy, but I adore him and he’s intricate. Yet, he’s got a grasp on it. I’m not concerned about that, as I prefer not to memorize my lines too early. A young actor once asked me why I don’t do this, and I responded: ‘Because then I become the voice I listen to for cues. I want to hear it from you instead, and that will influence how I deliver my lines.’ In my opinion, that approach is more effective.
Othello opens on March 23 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
