In the excitement surrounding the impending introduction of the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s been quite a buzz about potential cast members. This week, whispers about three actors being considered for key roles have been overshadowed by a more significant rumor: It’s been suggested that Marvel might be considering Denzel Washington for a prominent villain role in the upcoming X-Men reboot.
The most recent speculation about Denzel Washington’s role in Black Panther 3 comes from Jeff Sneider on the Hot Mic podcast (via /Film). In his discussion, Sneider hinted that Washington might portray Magneto, the X-Men’s longtime antagonist. Although Sneider didn’t confirm it outright, he suggested that this could be a possibility. Keep in mind that while Sneider often provides accurate information, he isn’t always correct, so it’s best to approach this rumor with caution.
Indeed, imagine the spectacle if Marvel were to choose Denzel Washington for the role of Magneto in the MCU! With a charm that overshadows ten Glen Powells, Washington truly shines when portraying antagonists. For evidence, look no further than his captivating performance as Macrinus, the bisexual gangster supreme, in “Gladiator II.” Ridley Scott’s epic was made all the more compelling by Washington’s mesmerizing ability to devour the scenery – a talent that never fails to remind us of the sheer joy of watching him act.
The latest speculation regarding the X-Men reboot involves Washington as a potential cast member, following Sneider’s earlier report that Marvel is considering Sadie Sink from Stranger Things, Julia Butters from The Fabelmans, and Harris Dickinson from Babygirl for the characters Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde, and Scott Summers / Cyclops respectively.
Wait, Wouldn’t That Mean Denzel Washington Is Playing an X-Men Villain in ‘Black Panther 3’?
During interviews for “Gladiator II”, Denzel Washington accidentally revealed his role in “Black Panther 3”. This led him to reach out to director Ryan Coogler to apologize for leaking the information prematurely. Marvel Studios has not yet officially announced Washington’s involvement in the “Black Panther” sequel, but if the plans hold, it could be released following “Avengers: Secret Wars”, which is set for May 7, 2027. This suggests that “Black Panther 3” might be ready for screening as late as 2028.
We’re unsure yet about who might appear alongside Washington in Black Panther 3. During the promotional tour for Captain America: Brave New World, set to release on Feb. 14, Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore has been sharing updates on several upcoming projects, including the sequel to Black Panther. Moore didn’t officially announce Washington’s casting, but in a recent interview hinted that if Washington is part of Black Panther 3, he could potentially be a character from established lore. However, it’s unclear whether this refers to Marvel lore or the lore specific to Black Panther.
Moore didn’t provide details, leaving room for Washington to potentially play Magneto. Wakanda possesses an abundance of Vibranium, a metal that, when combined with steel, creates Adamantium – the same material used in Wolverine’s skeleton. Given Magneto’s immense mutant powers over metals, it seems quite possible that he could find himself in or near Wakanda. This appears to be a very natural way to introduce Magneto into the MCU. It’s worth noting that precious metals, including Adamantium, remain relevant in the MCU, with its debut scheduled for Captain America: Brave New World. Moreover, director Julius Onah has revealed that Adamantium’s introduction in Brave New World is setting the stage for Project X.
Instead of channeling Charlie during his Pepe Silvia phase on It’s Always Sunny, let me express my thought in a different way: Denzel Washington as Magneto seems quite fitting when you give it some thought. As long as Marvel doesn’t contradict this idea, I’ll keep hoping for its realization.
