As a fan who has followed Colin Jost’s career since his days on Saturday Night Live, I must say that this Olympic stint has been quite an unconventional rollercoaster ride for him. From the pristine beaches of Tahiti to the sunny shores of Malta, he has certainly experienced a global tour like no other!
Famous personalities such as Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg have been compensated handsomely for their roles as Olympics reporters, adding a unique perspective to the global event. Meanwhile, Colin Jost from Saturday Night Live garnered attention not due to his commentary – which he usually delivers with Michael Che on “Weekend Update” – but because of the series of injuries and illnesses that led to his withdrawal from Tahiti, where he was reporting on surfing. Recently, Jost has shared an update on his foot’s condition (it did not get amputated) from an unexpected location.
Upon touching down in Tahiti for the Paris Olympics, serving as a surfing correspondent (can’t believe it’s a genuine gig!), I found myself in a bit of a pickle. During my initial dip, my foot encountered those pesky coral reefs and got a nasty cut. This minor mishap led to a staph infection and an ear infection, unfortunately forcing me off the field. Contrary to assumptions, I wasn’t sent packing, but instead, shared updates from an unexpected location: Malta! As I shared on Instagram:
1) “Hey there, everything alright with you? That’s the most common message I’ve gotten in the last 2 days. It seems someone told you I lost a foot, but rest assured, I’m doing great. Contrary to sensationalized rumors spread by the media, I didn’t get kicked out of the Olympics – NBC merely declared my foot contagious and banished me to this beautiful island of Malta!”
It’s debatable whether Colin Jost’s experience in Malta was any more pleasant than his makeshift accommodation in Tahiti, a fact that amused Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson during an interview for their comedy show, Olympic Highlights. The interview was frequently interrupted by chickens wandering into the frame. Jost himself lightened the mood, humorously commenting that in Malta he was encompassed by countless British teenagers competing to see who could pass out the quickest.
I’m curious, what made NBC send Colin Jost to Malta? To be honest, I can’t say for sure based on his explanation, but I did find myself chuckling when he shared that tidbit.
In actuality, my presence in Malta is due to its history – it experienced no less than ten instances of the Bubonic Plague. Quite fittingly, it seems I am well-suited for this location.
Over the past fortnight, the surfing reporter has been going through a tough time, and he humorously magnified his troubles by stating that he had to swap foot photos for VPN access in order to stream surfing on Peacock. I highly recommend watching his latest update, which you can find below:

It’s reasonable to assume that this wasn’t the Olympic adventure he anticipated when the surfing enthusiast decided to journey to Tahiti for a fortnight. However, given his reported severe health complications, it’s comforting to see him recovering well – both physically and mentally, with no harm done to his feet.
