As a long-time comic book enthusiast who has seen countless adaptations come and go, I must say I find the news of Paramount Pictures adapting Devilina into a film quite intriguing. With my memory bank filled with stories of both hits and misses when it comes to bringing lesser-known comics to life on the big screen, I can’t help but feel a sense of cautious optimism about this project.
As a die-hard comic book enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the potential of a fresh franchise taking off – and that’s exactly what might happen with Paramount Pictures venturing into the world of Devilina! Originating from Atlas/Seabound Comics, Devilina made her debut in 1975, aiming to give Vampirella and Marvel’s Satana a run for their money. Although only two comics were published back then, the concept seems robust enough to capture Paramount Pictures’ attention, leading them to greenlight a movie adaptation. Here’s hoping they strike gold with this high-concept franchise!
As reported by Deadline, Steven Paul from Atlas Comics has sealed a deal with Paramount Pictures for the creation of a live-action film based on Devilina. Screenwriter Rebecca Webb is set to pen the script. The movie revolves around a naive young woman who ventures to New York in quest of her history, uncovering the shocking truth that she is Satan’s sister. It transpires that her twin brother has been controlling her actions, and a detective is probing a string of murders connected to her. In reference to the project, Steven Paul commented:
Right from the start, Atlas Comics’ diverse collection of characters and tales was designed to form a connected universe. Devilina acts as our starting point, and we are committed to preserving this original concept of Atlas, so that readers can deeply engage with these vibrant characters and captivating stories.
Jon Gonda, EVP of Production at Paramount Pictures’ Motion Picture Group said:
“We’re thrilled to join forces with SP Media for a journey into the deep-rooted comic book universe of Atlas, beginning with the renowned figure, Devilina.”
A New Cinematic Universe for Paramount Pictures
Despite being relatively unknown due to her limited appearances in two comics from a lesser-known publisher, Devilina’s high-concept premise makes her an appealing choice for a feature film. The intriguing idea of a woman who is the twin sister of the devil could work well in either an action or horror genre, reminiscent of the 1990s trend where studios opted for cult comics like The Rocketeer, Barb Wire, and Spawn as alternatives to more popular Marvel or DC characters. However, it’s important to note that adaptations of lesser-known comics have faced challenges recently, with films like 2020’s Bloodsport and the latest adaptation of The Crow receiving negative reviews from critics.
Devilina’s upcoming project at Paramount may lead to a connected cinematic universe, similar to that of Atlas/Seabound Comics characters such as Lomax, Grim Ghost, and Phoenix. These characters have roots in the original Devilina comics, which might be why they are considering this film. Instead of just one movie, they’re planning a series with interwoven storylines that could spawn additional films. Paramount recognizes potential in the Atlas/Seabound Library, much like how Warner Bros. utilizes DC and Disney leverages Marvel. If budgets are kept low, it could resemble the horror-shared universe of The Conjuring.
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but acknowledge the significant role Paramount Pictures played in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Initially, many viewed it as a risky venture, yet it was this partnership that set the stage for the ongoing dispute over the Hulk, preventing Marvel Studios from having complete control. Although Paramount missed out on a larger share when Disney acquired Marvel Studios, they still hold some impressive franchises. At present, their portfolio includes Mission: Impossible, Scream, Sonic the Hedgehog, Star Trek, Transformers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. If all goes well, Devilina could join these iconic franchises in the near future.
