Dexter is Back! But How Did He Survive?

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel an adrenaline rush knowing that America’s enigmatic fictional serial killer, Dexter Morgan, is back in action! The exciting news is that “Dexter: Resurrection,” the next chapter in Showtime’s captivating TV series based on Jeff Lindsay’s novels about a morally ambiguous murderer, is currently in development. Here are some key details we’ve gathered so far about Dexter’s upcoming comeback.

What Is The Dexter: Resurrection Premiere Date?

Enthusiasts can look forward to the return of Dexter on television screens in June 2025, which is great news. According to Clyde Phillips’ announcement in a video posted by Discussing Film (X), this series will make its debut on Showtime. Furthermore, it appears that viewers with a Paramount+ subscription and the additional Showtime feature may be able to stream Dexter: Resurrection online as well.

We’ll be sure to update once an official premiere date has been announced for the series.

What Dexter: Resurrection Is About

Fans may remember that the 2021 revival series “Dexter: New Blood” concluded with the main character, who had been living as Jim Lindsay in Iron Lake, New York following the controversial finale of the original series, seemingly being killed by his own son, Harrison. However, Showtime’s 2024 prequel series, “Dexter: Original Sin,” which follows a younger Dexter shaping his moral code while starting his career at Miami Metro in the 1990s, continues the story from where “New Blood” left off, revealing that Dexter was actually rescued and revived at a nearby hospital.

In this initial segment of “Original Sin”, we find a connection linking “New Blood” and “Dexter: Resurrection”. The latter title fittingly symbolizes this new chapter in the “Dexter” universe, as it will chronicle further adventures of our dark protagonist, who seems to have been miraculously reborn. Details about the storyline are being carefully concealed for now, but it’s clear that our lead character is set to encounter some old acquaintances once more.

The Dexter: Resurrection Cast

It appears that murderers, such as Dexter Morgan, seem to enjoy good company, as evidenced by the notable cast members announced in a recent Showtime press release for Dexter: Resurrection. Some names on this list may be familiar from the original Dexter series.

Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan)

Once more, Michael C. Hall steps back into the role of the main character in “Dexter: Resurrection,” a role he previously voiced for Young Dexter in “Dexter: Original Sin.” Previously known for his compelling performance as a homicidal character on “Six Feet Under,” which earned him a Golden Globe, Hall has since appeared in films such as “Game Night” and the Netflix original sci-fi movie “In the Shadow of the Moon,” along with TV series like “The Crown,” where he portrayed President John F. Kennedy, and the Netflix miniseries titled “Safe.

David Zayas (Angel Batista)

Previously working alongside Dexter, Angel Batista – portrayed by David Zayas – is a well-recognized character who transitioned to the rank of Captain in the series ‘Dexter: New Blood’. Subsequently, he expanded his acting portfolio by joining the cast of ‘Gotham’ as gangster Sal Maroni. Known for his Puerto Rican roots, Zayas has also played a governor on ‘Blue Bloods’, and more recently recurred on ‘The Bear’.

James Remar (Harry Morgan)

In Dexter: New Blood, Deb Morgan’s hallucination took on the role of Dexter’s conscience, a position previously held by his adoptive father, Harry. In the original series, James Remar portrayed Harry, and he is reprising this role. Some of Remar’s recent notable performances include Black Lightning (one of Netflix’s top DC TV shows), Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan and winner of the Best Picture Oscar, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, and Transformers One.

Jack Alcott (Harrison Morgan)

Following his portrayal of Harrison Morgan, Dexter’s teenage son, in “Dexter: New Blood,” Jack Alcott is poised to re-take the role for “Dexter: Resurrection.” Additionally, he has been recognized for his roles in Showtime’s Western miniseries “The Good Lord Bird” and as a guest star on the first season cast of “Poker Face.

Clyde Phillips Returns As Showrunner

Clyde Phillips has been part of the Dexter universe right from its inception. He served as the showrunner for the initial series, and more recently, for New Blood and Original Sin. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that he’s coming back to supervise the production of Dexter: Resurrection.

Additionally, Michael C. Hall, the lead actor, has taken on an executive producer role as well, having held the position since 2008 in the original “Dexter” series and now in this new one. Other executive producers include Scott Reynolds from “Jessica Jones”, Tony Hernandez recognized for his work on “Emily in Paris”, and Lilly Burns, who has been a producer for “Russian Doll”.

Dexter: Resurrection Started Shooting In January 2025

In the video posted by Discussing Film on X, Clyde Phillips announced that principal photography for Dexter: Resurrection was due to begin in early January 2025. This information was also shared by director Marcos Siega (as reported by ComicBook.com) in a now-deleted Instagram post on January 9, featuring a film slate found in the snow.

Questions I Have About Dexter: Resurrection

Among the many outstanding television programs, particularly in the realm of fictional crime series, Dexter stands out as one of my personal favorites, occupying a notable position. Consequently, given my enthusiasm for this show, I’m eager to learn more about what lies ahead in Dexter: Resurrection.

Is Deb’s “Ghost” Going To Be Involved?

It brings me genuine joy to learn that James Remar is reprising his role as Harry Morgan in “Dexter: Resurrection,” but I must confess, it feels odd seeing him return following Deb Morgan’s portrayal by Jennifer Carpenter, which was one of her standout roles. Her character served as Dexter’s imaginary guide, and it would be intriguing if we could catch a glimpse of her “spirit” in some capacity. Ideally, there might even be a flashback featuring the detective while she was still alive, but only if the plot justifies it.

Will Angel Confront Dexter?

In the last installment of Dexter: New Blood, Angel Batista finds out from Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) that Dexter might be alive, leading him to think Dexter could be involved in Maria LaGuerta’s murder. If Dexter: Resurrection fails to address this plotline, it would be a significant oversight. Consequently, I’m eagerly waiting to see how things unfold when these old work associates meet again.

How Will Dexter Manage to Escape?

It’s no secret to fans of the Dexter series that the protagonist possesses a knack for escaping – a talent which undoubtedly proves useful in the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection. Given his awareness of those who have exposed his identity, it seems unlikely he’ll want to linger in the hospital once awake. Instead, I anticipate he’ll devise an inconspicuous exit strategy as soon as possible. My curiosity is piqued to find out how he will pull off this escape act again.

How To Watch Previous Installments Of The Dexter Universe

There’s still some time left until “Dexter: Resurrection” debuts, at least several months. This gives both existing fans and newcomers ample opportunity to watch the original series (currently one of the top crime TV shows on Netflix) and its sequels. These spin-offs can be found on Paramount+, but you’ll need a Showtime add-on for access.

How to watch the Dexter Universe

I didn’t think I’d ever witness Dexter Morgan alive once more, yet I find myself anxiously looking forward to his apparent return to life.
