As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless television series, I must say that Dexter: Original Sin has managed to captivate me like few others have in recent memory. Having followed Dexter Morgan since his inception on Showtime, it’s truly heartening to see this prequel series not only live up to the original but surpass it in some ways.
Warning: The Following Contains Mild SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin, Episode 3, “Miami Vice”
The “Dexter: Original Sin” series is currently airing in full on Paramount+, in collaboration with Showtime, releasing two complete episodes today to keep fans entertained during the holiday season. This prequel has been a delightful throwback to the original while offering long-term “Dexter” universe enthusiasts fresh content to explore. The show has received praise from both viewers and critics, and interestingly, the premiere episode broke numerous records for Showtime.
According to The Wrap, the first episode of “Dexter: Original Sin,” titled “And in the Beginning…”, was viewed by over 2.1 million viewers worldwide, setting a new record for Showtime’s largest streaming premiere ever. This surpassed the previous record held by the initial episode of “Yellowjackets” Season 2, which had 1.3 million viewers. To underscore Dexter’s enduring popularity, “Original Sin” also generated the most social media buzz for a Showtime premiere, with approximately 657,000 interactions across platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
It’s evident from those viewership figures that even with its contentious aspects, many viewers are keen to follow the latest adventures of everyone’s favorite vigilante serial killer, Dexter Morgan, particularly delving into his early years as an aspiring blood spatter analyst. Patrick Gibson has received much acclaim for his performance as the young Dexter, a tribute well-deserved given his ability to infuse the character with unique qualities while simultaneously embodying the essence of Michael C. Hall flawlessly.
‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Introduces Us to Even More Characters We Love
One of the delightful aspects of Dexter: Original Sin lies in witnessing a new set of actors infusing their unique interpretations into characters we grew fond of from the initial series. Gibson, playing Morgan, has been impressive, but it’s also essential to acknowledge Christian Slater as his adoptive father, Harry, and Molly Brown as his unruly, mischievous sister Debra. The team at Miami Metro, including Angel Batista (James Martinez), Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu), and Camilla Figg (Sarah Kinsey), also contribute significantly to the show’s charm.
In the third episode of “Dexter: Original Sin,” titled “Miami Vice,” I was thrilled to meet another long-awaited character: Maria LaGuerta, brilliantly played by Christina Milian. While we know she’ll rise through the ranks to become a lieutenant and eventually captain of Miami Metro’s homicide division, in this installment, she’s still a determined upstart, not shy about causing waves.
After three episodes of Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series continues to shine, keeping us equally captivated as we were at the beginning. It’s been an exhilarating journey so far, and we can hardly wait to discover what the rest of this season has in store for us. Frankly, given its momentum, it wouldn’t come as a shock if it extended beyond the 10-episode event to potentially continue into Season 2.
