The thrilling first season of Dexter: Original Sin has come to an end, leaving us eagerly awaiting the continuation in the next series titled Resurrection. However, there’s uncertainty about whether the prequel show will come back for a new season on Showtime. The horror-drama’s audience numbers suggest potential for another season, and if it does get renewed, I firmly believe we should be treated to a young version of Jim Doakes in future episodes.
Fervent fans of the original series “Dexter” likely recall Detective Doakes vividly, despite the passage of time that might make forgetting somewhat understandable. For those who might find it challenging to remember Erik King’s character beyond his distinctive dialogue, here’s why he’s a top pick for a character that should be reintroduced if Season 2 of “Dexter: Original Sin” materializes, due to his significant impact on the series.
What Bringing In James Doakes Would Add To Dexter: Original Sin
In the series “Dexter: Original Sin,” Dexter Morgan, despite being a veteran serial killer, still faced near misses due to his limited experience in the field. This adds an authentic touch to the storyline, but it also highlights how Miami Metro Police Department seems unusually oblivious. Although I have my suspicions that someone within the department might be aware of Dexter’s hidden side, what we need is a character who is more suspicious or puts some sort of pressure on him, given his inexplicable disappearances for extended periods.
James Doakes is the individual who, according to Dexter himself in the initial series, often felt uneasy around the main character due to his peculiarities. He doesn’t find Dexter’s talent for detailing crime scenes charming, and he frequently senses odd feelings from him. Essentially, Dexter’s efforts to conceal his darker impulses are unsuccessful with Doakes, making him an ideal addition in Season 2 as he poses a potential threat to Dexter’s secret life.
Additionally, it’s important to recall that Erik King’s character, who held a significant role in the original series, was written out in Season 2. I found him incredibly captivating during his brief tenure, but his presence was relatively minimal compared to the overall duration of the show. Introducing Doakes into Original Sin could provide us with extra screen time for this charismatic character, despite the fact that we are aware he is destined for a tragic end eventually.

What Dexter: Original Sin Can Do To Improve Doakes’ Story
In the time of the original series, James Doakes’ bond with Maria LaGuerta didn’t draw much attention. At present, she’s connected with Harry, but it’s clear they will eventually be together – a connection where their relationship is believed to have flourished. I’m keen to witness that growth.
In “Dexter: Original Sin,” we might discover when Doakes first started suspecting Dexter Morgan due to his interactions with Dexter. It’s worth noting that LaGuerta has her suspicions about Harry, as she observed him purposely covering up her leads on Brian Moser, which could have helped her connect the NHI killer and Dexter. Will LaGuerta share this information with Doakes, potentially causing him to question Harry’s intentions?
It’s clear that understanding why Doakes disliked Dexter and eventually uncovered his secret as a serial killer isn’t fully covered in the original series, despite the fact that many other characters at Miami Metro could have had similar suspicions. There seems to be more depth to their relationship, and I hope the upcoming series Dexter: Original Sin will offer a more substantial explanation for me.

Bringing In James Doakes Would Also Make For A Fun Interaction Between Him And Another Character He Never Met
In discussing the show “Dexter”, Maria LaGuerta subtly mentioned another character in “Original Sin” that some viewers might have overlooked. The young detective, after meeting with Miguel Prado following an investigation with Harry, casually dropped his name. This led me to ponder if there was ever a time when Prado and James Doakes had interacted?
In simpler terms, if Detective Doakes had encountered Prado, the shady prosecutor, earlier in the series before his role as a major villain in season 3, it would have raised red flags for him, wouldn’t it? Even though Prado wasn’t killing people at that point, it could be an interesting foreshadowing to see Doakes (or other characters) having similar suspicions about the future villain as Dexter often makes characters feel.
It appears unlikely that Dexter: Original Sin would feel compelled to create such a scenario. LaGuerta is familiar with Prado, and Doakes eventually becomes her partner. It seems plausible that he might accompany her at times when seeking advice on a case or other tasks she’s undertaking.

How Would Harry And Doakes Interact?
I’m equally fascinated by the possibility of James Doakes interacting with Harry Morgan, who is Dexter’s adoptive father and creator of “The Code.” Though Dexter is the known murderer, I believe that the series “Original Sin” hints at Harry having his fair share of questionable actions. Instead of encouraging Brian Moser to seek therapy as a child, he chose to mold him into a killer.
It appears that Harry was highly respected in Miami Metro, so much so that his children easily secured positions within the department upon finishing their training. This leads me to ponder about Doakes’ feelings towards Harry Morgan and whether he held a similar impression of him as he did his son. While I hope the answer is affirmative, I suspect Harry may be more adept at concealing his true character compared to his son.
It’s an excellent thought to consider incorporating James Doakes into the second season of Dexter: Original Sin. However, before we can truly appreciate his potential involvement, the series needs to be renewed first. To expedite this process, why not rewatch the previous season on Paramount+? This could help boost the chances of a renewal. But, as always, nothing is certain in television land.
One great aspect of streaming “Dexter: Original Sin” is that you can also access other Dexter shows on the same platform. With the series seemingly on the verge of a significant comeback, now might be an ideal moment to reacquaint yourself with the original show if it’s been a while since you last watched it.
