Dexter: Original Sin – Where is Evelyn Vogel? Creator Explains Character’s Absence

The 10-episode run of “Dexter: Original Sin” concluded on Paramount+ over the weekend, with some viewers finding themselves a bit perplexed by the prequel series. Despite its excellence and Patrick Gibson’s captivating portrayal of young Dexter Morgan, there were certain elements that appeared to contradict the original series. Notably, the character Dr. Evelyn Vogel was conspicuously absent from the prequel. Now, the show’s creator and showrunner, Clyde Phillips, has explained why she was omitted from the prequel series, and his reasoning may come as a surprise.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Phillips explained that Dr. Vogel’s absence from Dexter: Original Sin is straightforward – “it simply didn’t arise.” Fans may remember that Vogel played a crucial part in Season 8 of the original series and was the one who assisted Harry in devising the code that Dexter followed throughout his life. However, in Original Sin, Vogel is nowhere to be seen, which seems to alter that aspect of Dexter’s past so that it never occurred.

For Phillips, he had so much going on that Vogel wasn’t even a character on his radar:

In the writing process, especially when crafting a thriller, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of the ending. Visualize this as if the ending is a destination on a wall, and you’re moving backwards towards the beginning. Imagine yourself in a hotel hallway, walking backwards; each room you pass by represents an episode, leading up to your current position.

As a fan, I can share that they have something they refer to as NPO, or no specific order, ideas for scenes they want to create. Approximately 35-40% of these ideas make it into an episode, much like a passing ice truck on the road. However, the story and characters always take priority. So, at this moment, Dr. Vogel isn’t really on my mental radar, truth be told.

The Future of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Remains Uncertain

It’s important to point out that Phillips didn’t contribute to the development of Dr. Evelyn Vogel’s character since his work was limited to Seasons 1 through 4 of the original series. He might not have anticipated her significant influence on Dexter’s past, or possibly chose to ignore her, similar to how fans wish they could forget about Season 8 of Dexter.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over the implications of Vogel’s absence from the scene. This leads me to wonder which significant plot points Michael C. Hall (Dexter) might be ready to alter or leave out if Dexter: Original Sin were to make a comeback for Season 2. Regrettably, at this moment, it seems that Paramount has not given their nod for a second installment, and honestly, I’m preoccupied with the filming of Dexter: Resurrection, so I haven’t given much thought to potential future developments. However, when the time is right – and I have faith that it will be – it will undoubtedly be intriguing to discover whether Original Sin picks up where it left off or if there will be a minor time leap to introduce characters like Tom Matthews and others who significantly impacted Dexter’s life.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that you can immerse yourself in the entire Dexter universe right now! Stream the original series, the new chapters like ‘New Blood’, and ‘Original Sin’ on Paramount+. Excitingly, ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ is being produced at the moment, with a planned premiere this June. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
