On Valentine’s Day, Netflix debuted the comedy-adventure movie titled “Dhoom Dhaam,” starring Yami Gautam and Pratik Gandhi. This cinematic piece, directed by Rishab Seth, centers around a newlywed pair who must escape on their wedding night due to a confusing predicament. If you haven’t caught it yet, the thought-provoking monologue delivered by Yami Gautam about the challenges faced by women makes it well worth adding this film to your viewing list.
In one scene that’s been generating a lot of discussion in Dhoom Dhaam, we see Pratik Gandhi challenging his newly-married spouse, portrayed by Yami Gautam, about whether it’s fashionable for women to tell lies.
In a passionate speech, Yami Gautam’s character Koyel asserts, “We have no pleasure in telling lies, but we must. It is known how difficult it is to be a girl in India. You won’t even get a breath for one day, you will come across such intense claustrophobia.
In simpler terms, before marriage, women often find themselves bound by their parents’ guidelines, and afterward, they face the expectations of their in-laws. They may feel pressured to have children, especially if a girl is born, with this desire for more offspring growing stronger. Their personal goals and ambitions are frequently overlooked, while in various public settings such as buses, on the street, at fitness centers, or shopping malls, they often encounter persistent, unwelcome attention from men.
She strongly pointed out that people who shy away from making eye contact might still exhibit unsuitable behavior in large groups. Women frequently face objectification and disrespectful language, leading to regular harassment. In an attempt to steer clear of unwanted attention, parents often urge their daughters to wear long-sleeved salwar kameez, even on extremely hot days. She also touched upon a concerning pattern: women’s phones being flooded with unsolicited explicit images. Her message to men was clear: women don’t appreciate such images and it is best for them to stop sending them altogether.
She went on to say, “Men will troll, abuse, threaten rape, and then ask why they were blocked. Who behaves so shamelessly? Who flirts, who teases, who harasses, but whose freedom are we concerned about for women? We are.
Yami asserted, “We don’t have any inclination towards lying. We may occasionally disappear from home quietly, but this doesn’t mean our character is flawed. Just like everyone else, we too have the full right to live our lives once.
Previously, during an interview with News18, Yami Gautam discussed her performance in Dhoom Dhaam alongside Pratik Gandhi, specifically her powerful monologue filmed in a single shot. She expressed that she doesn’t typically anticipate multiple takes for such scenes. Instead, she values nailing it on the first try because she believes the initial take usually encapsulates the most sincere and genuine emotion.
If you haven’t seen it yet, why wait? Jump on over to Netflix and start streaming Dhoom Dhaam immediately. Enjoy, and remember, we’ll take the credit later!
