A number of well-known actresses have discussed the issue of unfair treatment and wage disparity in Bollywood. Joining this conversation, Dia Mirza shared her on-set experience from the movie Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge, featuring Salman Khan. She disclosed that there was a lack of respect for women’s boundaries, and she was told not to ask questions but merely to carry out instructions.
During an interview on Zoom, Dia Mirza discussed the work conditions for women in the Hindi film industry when she first started out. She explained that the shooting schedules were primarily based on the availability and location restrictions of male actors. Although this practice still occurs today, she noted that understanding the storyline now makes it simpler to navigate through the process. However, during her initial years, she and many others didn’t have any insight into the movie’s plot.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reminisce about my time on Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge, a project I eagerly joined forces with director Pankaj Parashar, renowned for his work in ChaalBaaz. With the charismatic Salman Khan leading the charge and a prestigious producer backing the film, I had high expectations for a meticulously planned production. However, what stood out was not the grandeur of our elaborate set pieces, but rather the fact that the script, which I was so looking forward to diving into, wasn’t readily accessible to me.
Dia pondered over the disorganized filming procedure, noting that no workshops or script readings had taken place prior to filming. She remembered instances where scenes were penned in Bhojpuri despite her character hailing from Rajasthan. With scripts given to her mere minutes before shooting and costumes hastily sewn on set, the absence of preparation added an extra layer of difficulty to the entire experience.
In her own words, Dia Mirza mentioned an incident where she tried to understand certain aspects of her character. However, her questions were met with dismissal and she was advised not to question things. She remembered saying, “They explained my character wore a chaniya-choli, to which I responded, ‘But why?’ They replied, ‘You’re asking too many questions. Stop that. Just follow what you’re being told.’
What bothered her the most was the utter lack of respect for a woman’s personal boundaries. She expressed it as, “What hindered me significantly was the total disregard for a woman’s personal space. I wish to be enlightened, so that I may educate myself and act more appropriately in the future.
In the movie “Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge,” directed by Pankaj Parashar, stars like Salman Khan, Dia Mirza, Sushmita Sen, Rajpal Yadav, Inder Kumar, and Arbaaz Khan took on significant roles. The music for this film, created by Daboo Malik and the duo Sajid-Wajid, became extremely popular and resonated deeply with viewers.
