It’s aptly titled that the track from the movie “The Six Triple Eight” for which the acclaimed songwriter Diane Warren is nominated for an Oscar this year, goes by “The Journey.” This is because no other Oscar nominee has had a journey as remarkable as Warren’s: This year, at the age of 68 and hailing from Van Nuys, she is up for her 16th Oscar nomination for best original song in her career, making it her 8th consecutive nomination and her 10th time in the last 11 years. Remarkably, she has yet to take home the award!
No individual has been nominated as frequently as Warren for that particular Oscar category, and no woman has ever accumulated more nominations across all Oscar categories. Yet, neither of them have managed to secure a win. (It’s worth noting that Warren did receive an honorary statuette from the Academy in 2022, but it doesn’t count as a traditional victory.)
It’s important to note that just because Warren hasn’t won an award doesn’t mean she’s disliked. In fact, quite the opposite is true – she’s highly respected and popular in town, particularly within the music community. This group is responsible for determining the best original song nominations. It’s not through lack of like or respect that Warren has received 16 nominations.
It appears that Warren’s issue lies in years when she has been nominated for a standout song, but unfortunately, she has often faced off against an even more popular contender. For instance, if she was nominated for “How Do I Live” from Con Air, she would have been up against “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic that year. Similarly, during the year when she and Lady Gaga were both nominated for “Til It Happens to You,” they faced stiff competition from songs like “Glory” from Selma, which had a wider reach within the Academy since it determined the best original song winner.
There’s a good chance that at some time, a major crisis or difficult situation might head towards Warren instead of away from him. Is it plausible that this could occur this year? Definitely a possibility.
Despite Warren’s film being the sole contender for her song nomination this year, implying that either many people didn’t watch or disliked the movie, her chances might improve with the drama surrounding another Netflix film, “Emilia Pérez.” Initially, the controversy over the best actress nominee, Karla Sofía Gascón, has caused some voters to reject the entire film. Furthermore, “Emilia Pérez” has two songs nominated this year – “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.” It’s possible that these competing nominations could diminish their individual prospects.
In this scenario, it’s not guaranteed that “The Journey” and Warren would reap the benefits of the award. Since the ballot only lists the nominated songs, not the songwriters, most voters might be unaware that supporting “The Journey” means backing Warren. However, they likely assume that a vote for “Never Too Late” from the movie “Elton John: Never Too Late” would go to Elton John. Moreover, there’s a chance that people might be drawn to vote for “Like a Bird”, not because of Warren, but because it comes from a film (Sing Sing) that was popular enough to secure multiple nominations – best actor (Colman Domingo) and best adapted screenplay, unlike the others.
However, it’s possible, as usual, that something might go wrong for Warren. Yet, she plans to attend the ceremony with the same enthusiasm and optimism she always carries.
This week, Warren graciously guided THR on a nostalgic musical journey at the main office of RealSongs, her music publishing company in Hollywood. She performed a compilation of all 16 of her nominated songs in less than eight minutes. This heartening display serves as a poignant testament to both her extraordinary talent and the unfortunate luck she’s faced for such a long time.
