His latest project, the intriguing film Tees, remains undistributed despite its completion. Netflix decided to put the project on hold due to corporate restructuring and industry turbulence.
For several years now, the movie “Tees” remained untouched following Netflix’s decision to abandon it in 2021. However, this year, it was presented at the Dharamshala International Film Festival. After the screening, director Dibakar Banerjee shared his feelings about the impact of its shelving during an interview with Moneycontrol.
He expressed, “I experienced periods of anger, frustration, and deep sadness, to the point where I didn’t recognize it myself. However, my daughters persistently pointed out, ‘Dad, you seem angry all the time.’ Following this realization, I began therapy and have since found a sense of well-being.
Initially scheduled to debut on Netflix between 2020 and 2021, the release of Tees was ultimately postponed when Netflix decided to back out from the agreement in 2021. However, director Dibakar Banerjee emphasized that throughout the film’s production, Netflix had been quite supportive. He mentioned that there were not many obstacles from their end, but there were minor disagreements regarding casting choices.
The director predominantly prevailed in those conflicts, but one demanded some give-and-take. He also disclosed that he personally trimmed parts of the movie, although Netflix suggested he be firm when proposing modifications.
Once the movie was finished, they suggested additional revisions, however, Netflix recommended they handle it with assurance. Regrettably, not long after, Netflix experienced a series of personnel changes, and, much like in many corporate settings, the decisions made by the previous team were either modified or put on hold.

It’s strange to admit, but I’ve developed an unusual fondness for tackling challenges head-on. Now, I relish the thrill that comes with overcoming adversity.
Pondering over his position in society, he confided that he perceives himself as ‘flawed’ and ‘somewhat unbalanced’. He further stated that until he admits his own instability, he won’t truly understand where he fits in a world he believes is oblivious and indifferent to the events unfolding around them.
Instead of referring to it as ‘the great project of unseeing’, he prefers to describe it as a lifestyle and filmmaking philosophy centered around not focusing too much or dwelling on things. He chooses to create movies with limited resources and then quickly move on to the next project.
Dibakar, too, showed empathy towards Netflix’s choice to postpone the release of Tees. Considering the current stressful environment in the industry, where leaders at services like Amazon Prime Video have faced severe threats and legal complications due to questionable content, he suggests these external pressures may result in self-suppression or self-censorship.
If you bring charges against high-ranking officials, if they face death threats or online harassment, or if multiple non-bailable cases are filed against them, causing them to pay large sums of money – around 20-30 lakhs – for legal representation in political matters, this could cause them significant distress. As a result, others may choose to self-censor out of fear.
The movie, titled “Tees,” narrates the story of a single Indian family across three generations, starting in the 1980s and extending up to 2042. This production boasts an impressive lineup of actors such as Manisha Koirala, Divya Dutta, Naseeruddin Shah, Huma Qureshi, Shashank Arora, Zoya Hussain, and Neeraj Kabi.
Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee has disclosed that he is aggressively searching for a distribution channel for his movie since Netflix opted out of it. He mentioned that he’s metaphorically ‘knocking on every door’ to find a distributor, but as of now, there’s no news about the film’s release.
Simultaneously, Dibakar Banerjee has built an impressive filmography, including cult favorites like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, and Love Sex Aur Dhokha.
