Did Agatha Kill Her Son Nicholas Scratch? I Was Sorta Convinced Until I Rewatched Agatha All Along's Fifth Episode

As a long-time fan of magical realms and intricate storytelling, I must say that Agatha All Along has been a delightful journey so far. However, the fifth episode left me scratching my head more than once, particularly regarding the enigmatic figure of Nicholas Scratch.

Spoilers below for “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power,” so be warned if you haven’t yet watched Agatha All Along’s fifth episode.

Among fellow viewers of the Disney+ series “Agatha All Along”, it’s a topic of much discussion: the enigma surrounding the current state and location of Nicholas Scratch, Kathryn Hahn’s character’s son who may be deceased or even demonic. The puzzle thickens after the witches’ Ouija Board session, where Evanora Harkness’ ghost possessed Agatha, causing Agatha to act strangely and making Rio uneasy. Additionally, we heard audio evidence of Nicholas Scratch for the first time during this episode.

Upon my first watch, I had a definite opinion about that scene and its implications on Agatha’s past. However, after rewatching with a more focused mindset, I developed an entirely new perspective that significantly reduced any empathy for Agatha that the previous thoughts might have fostered. (I hope future Marvel TV shows continue to be as intricately mysterious as this one.)

At First I Thought Nicholas Scratch Was Begging Agatha To Stop Siphoning His Powers

Throughout its entirety, the cabin-set trial seemed to lack the structure found in previous trials, leaving me uncertain if it truly was Agatha’s trial. However, she played a pivotal role throughout this multi-generational drama. It was her actions that drained Alice of both her abilities and her life. The only thing that distracted her from her obsession with Alice was the teenager’s peculiar shout of Nicholas Scratch’s name as his watch alarm rang.

“This incident resulted in a particularly chilling scene this season, as the hollow and eerie cry of a child’s voice, seemingly detached from a body, echoed: “Mama! Stop!” (Agatha’s swift response to the name and tone suggested that it wasn’t just any other child’s voice.) My more cautious mind couldn’t help but entertain the grim assumption that Nicholas was begging Agatha to cease her actions against him.

The story suggests a possibility that the boy might have displayed magical abilities reminiscent of a warlock at an early age. This could potentially mean two different outcomes: either Agatha, driven by greed for power, drained her son to his death, or she was forced into using her powers against him out of provocation. Although it’s a disturbing idea, given Agatha’s past behavior, it isn’t entirely implausible. Moreover, such an extreme and personal act could account for the torment she experiences regarding that period in her life.

Additionally, it appeared as if this moment might mirror Sharon’s traumatic hallucination from Episode 3 in WandaVision, where she recalled her husband seemingly choking (potentially to death) in the series premiere. However, unlike Sharon’s flashback, which retained its unsettling intensity, Nicholas’ delivery was noticeably distinct, lacking the same sense of urgency. Furthermore, it may be challenging to express anything under such circumstances when one’s power is being drained.

Adopting a fresh perspective, I arrived at an entirely new understanding regarding Agatha and Teen’s exchanges during the last few moments.

Rewatching How Agatha Handled Teen At The End Changed My Mind About That Ouiji Board Moment

During my initial watch of episode five, I thought that Agatha seemed troubled and bewildered by Teen mentioning her son within the cabin, along with how swiftly she ended Alice’s suffering. If I hadn’t added my own feelings into the equation, Agatha’s sudden change to evil would be much easier to understand.

After stepping out of the cabin, it became apparent that Agatha immediately began to experiment with the abilities she gained from Alice’s demise, but was evidently unsatisfied by the limited output. This longing for more power seemed to drive her actions when Teen challenged her in a confrontational way. Furthermore, the mention of Nicholas Scratch’s name appears to have stripped away the last trace of maternal feelings Agatha had towards Joe Locke’s character.

Essentially, what I’m getting at is this: It seems her severe remarks towards Teen, using the term “Pet” which refers to his mother, weren’t just a ploy to expose his deceit, but rather an attempt to provoke his deep-seated supernatural wrath. Agatha was aware she was touching on sensitive spots, and appeared to enjoy the outcome as his magical powers manifested (as depicted in the image above). This leads me to believe that she wanted him to unleash those powers against her, so she could absorb them too.

Was Agatha perhaps under the mistaken belief that he was unaware of her past, or that he hadn’t seen what transpired within the cabin where she took Alice’s magic? Alternatively, could it be that her excessive pride and self-assurance blinded her to the possibility that he had other strategies to thwart her, apart from simply using finger-wagging lightning?

To put it in my own words, I wasn’t expecting Teen to have telepathic powers, given how taken aback Kathryn Hahn’s character seemed after being unexpectedly grabbed and mud-dunked by Lilia and Jen. Fans like me have always admired the intelligence and cunning of her Westview persona, but as we’ve witnessed in both the finale of WandaVision and the premiere of AAA, Agatha is at her weakest when she believes she has already triumphed.

Which brings us back to the Nicholas Scratch of it all. With the above in mind, I’m now of the belief that instead of killing her own son, Agatha greedily siphoned the magic out of someone else who was extremely important to her and her son, possibly even Nicholas’ father. (At least assuming the kid’s MCU birth adhered largely to human biology.) And that his Ouija Board plea was for her to stop killing someone else, which itself may or may not have led to the kid’s death or disappearance.

It’s uncertain what’s going to unfold next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly with the character Teen (either Maximoff or Kaplan) becoming Billy “Warlock,” and how this might impact the magical aspect of the storyline. However, it’s likely that Agatha, Lilia, and Jen will reappear in future episodes, as there are still unresolved ‘Wizard of Oz’-like elements to be explored before the season concludes.
