As a gamer who’s been around for quite some time, I can relate to Josh Hartnett‘s journey in Hollywood. Much like how my character levels up and takes a break from questing to explore new territories, Hartnett too seemed to have taken a step back from the limelight to find his own path.
In the early 2000s, it felt like Josh Hartnett was unavoidable in films, having transitioned from supporting roles in movies such as “The Virgin Suicides” to leading parts in blockbusters like “Pearl Harbor” and “Black Hawk Down.” However, his career trajectory seemed to slow down, with fewer updates about Mr. Hartnett for several years. That was until he announced his collaboration with Christopher Nolan on the film “Oppenheimer” last year. This raises the question: Why did Josh Hartnett take a break from Hollywood? He shares his story.
In the year 2014, Hartnett was somewhat secluded from public view, and he confided to the now-closed Details Magazine that stardom was becoming increasingly overwhelming for him.
I graced the front pages of numerous magazines, but the fame made it difficult for me to venture out. I felt uneasy in my own presence, often isolated. My trust in others was scarce, and I struggled to connect with them. Navigating these feelings is an ongoing journey for me.
It appears that he stepped away from the spotlight in Hollywood for a while. This break, however, caused him to change paths both professionally and personally. It may seem like we haven’t seen Hartnett on our screens for a long time, but a recent article in The Guardian reveals that he actually took only 18 months off work. Upon his return, his roles were less prominent compared to before, which can be attributed to the choices he made during this period. He himself mentioned:
As a gamer, I felt the need to strike a balance in my life; work shouldn’t consume me entirely. At that point, there was this unspoken pressure to surrender completely. I witnessed how some people back then got lost in their work, almost erased by it. I didn’t want to follow suit and lose myself in the same way.
As a gamer living in the UK now, I chose to call Hampshire my home with my lovely wife Tamsin Egerton. Compared to Los Angeles or New York, it’s a more tranquil place for us to dwell. Being married, I’m on a visa that lets me stay with my family, but it limits my travel outside the country to 180 days annually. This means I can work on one significant project overseas, like a movie, or take on smaller roles here and there, such as my recent experience on FX and Hulu’s The Bear.
Known for turning down the offer of playing Superman not once, but twice, this individual opted for lesser-known films such as “Stuck Between Stations” and “The Lovers.” From 2014 to 2016, however, he graced our screens with his presence in the popular Showtime series “Penny Dreadful,” a show that was both accessible and filmed in the UK.
Currently, Josh Hartnett is set to appear in “The Bear” and M Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film “Trap,” slated for release in 2024. This latest role marks a shift or pivot in his career, as he refers to it. With notable performances in “Oppenheimer” as a dedicated nuclear physicist and an unforgettable episode of “Black Mirror,” Hartnett appears to be regaining popularity. However, the success of “Trap” remains uncertain; it could either be a one-time occurrence or the beginning of a comeback as a leading man.
