Did Marina Squerciati Leave Chicago PD?

As a dedicated fan of “Chicago P.D.”, I must say that the latest episode left me on the edge of my seat! The absence of Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) was certainly felt, but it’s comforting to know she’ll be back soon. Her temporary replacement, Emily Martel (Victoria Cartagena), is proving to be a fascinating character with her own set of struggles and strengths.

Contains Spoilers for “Chicago P.D.” Season 12, Episode 1 — “Ten Ninety-Nine”

On “Chicago P.D.,” turmoil reigns supreme, and the latest episode, “Ten Ninety-Nine,” follows suit. The team is swamped with new cases, they’re understaffed, and Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) is struggling to come to terms with Hailey Upton’s (Tracy Spiridakos) decision to leave Chicago, as well as his own ordeal during the Season 11 finale, which included drug use, kidnapping, and a near-death experience. To make matters worse, they’re down a cop; Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is absent from town.

Fretful fans speculating that Squerciati may depart the series similarly to Tracy Spiridakos, take comfort in knowing that Burgess’ absence is likely to be temporary for just a couple of episodes rather than permanent. Squerciati was spotted back on the “Chicago P.D.” set as early as August 20th, and has been sharing photos from the set ever since, hinting at her continued involvement in the show.

The storyline carefully clarifies why character Burgess is absent from Chicago. Her partner, Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), informs us that she’s attending a conference and expresses concern over their busy workload, intending to return early to assist. This is unusual for her, and throughout the episode, Ruzek introduces his longtime friend and temporary colleague, Emily Martel (Victoria Cartagena), to the precinct’s ways. Interestingly, Burgess’ absence offers us an opportunity to get to know Martel better – and prepare ourselves for the events that unfold during the episode involving her character.

It’s not smooth sailing for Ruzek and Martel while Burgess is away

When Burgess is away, Ruzek and Martel join forces with Voight in the field, aiming to assist him. However, Ruzek expresses concerns about his friend’s readiness to rejoin the force, as she had been absent due to a tragic incident where her partner was killed on duty, leading to a nervous breakdown. This investigation-aiding excursion with Ruzek is crucial for her, given that it marks the first opportunity for her to work in the field since her breakdown.

In the end, Voight successfully executes an operation, but not without his informant, Rabbit, being wounded in the abdomen. Despite this, Martel believes she’s done all she could to assist the team. Regrettably, just as they step out of the car to retaliate, shots erupt. Both Martel and Ruzek engage in a gunfight, but it results in Martel getting shot. The story concludes with Martel lying on the sidewalk, bleeding profusely and her eyes fixed wide open. Viewers will learn next week if she survives.
