As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersion into the world of Batman, I can confidently state that The Penguin has emerged as one of the most captivating adaptations from the silver screen to the small one. Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oz Cobblepot is nothing short of a masterclass, eclipsing even Robert Pattinson’s Batman in my books!
In my opinion, “The Penguin” television series has established itself as one of the greatest adaptations from film to TV ever made. It has skillfully transformed Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb character into a deeply human and entertaining figure, perhaps even more engaging than Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman. Remarkably, the show doesn’t rely heavily on connections to the “The Batman” movie to succeed, although viewers continue to delight in the Riddler-related Easter eggs and references to “No Man’s Land”. Let’s explore the possible hints towards the Hush storyline now.
It’s possible that the connections being made in “The Penguin” might not directly tie to Hush references, but it’s intriguing that the character has mentioned the supervillain’s surname twice. This coincides with significant comic news about Hush since the original story arc. Could this be setting up for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II”?
Elliot Bridge Spotted In Episode 3
In the third episode titled “Bliss,” I found myself transported back to a fateful night – the night the Riddler’s bombs detonated. But this wasn’t just any recollection; it was seen through Victor’s eyes, as he celebrated with friends, cherished companions, and an individual destined for tragedy on a rooftop. The scene was filled with hints of what was to come in our shared future. However, the most significant Batman-related instant occurred when, from the building’s edge, Victor gazed upon the raging waters from that unusual catastrophe – the floodwaters.
That’s when the sign could be seen for Elliot Bridge, next to one for Midtown, as seen below.
In essence, it appears that Thomas Elliot may have descended from one of Gotham City’s original founders, as portrayed in comic books, and his significance was such that a major bridge in the city bears his name. Whether or not Edward Elliot, who met a tragic end in ‘The Batman’, is a relative is uncertain, but given that Edward is the surname used among ancestors in the comics, it seems unlikely to be mere coincidence.
Elliot Bridge Mentioned By Oz In Episode 6
In an episode, Byrne Street was mentioned, possibly a nod to renowned comic book artist John Byrne. During a scene where Oz addressed all other mob leaders and their right-hand men, Colin Farrell as The Penguin uttered the street’s name. He used this moment to imply that Gotham City’s wealthy families were the real antagonists.
As a gamer, I might put it this way: “Eager for retribution, eh? What’s holding you back? They’re just on the other side of the Elliot Bridge, built by our forefathers, yet they didn’t think to name it after you, Donny. Funny, isn’t it? Instead, it bears the name of the wealthy swindlers who claimed credit for your family’s labor.
It’s evident that the Elliots were a prominent and influential family during the construction of the bridge. Moreover, it’s worth noting that the Cobblepots were part of the upper echelon of society as well, though they subsequently lost their wealth. This could pave the way for The Batman: Part II or another story in this universe to explore Oz harboring resentment towards those who wronged his ancestors in the past.
Hush 2 Is Happening At DC Comics
Although some specifics remain undisclosed, DC legends Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb unveiled at NYCC that they’ll be developing a follow-up to the influential 2002 story arc, “Batman: Hush“. Titled “HUSH 2“, this sequel will unfold in the pages of DC’s Batman monthly comic book series starting from 2025, after current writer Chip Zdarsky concludes his run with an issue to be published in February. A lead-in story for “HUSH 2” will be included in the first issue of “Justice League Unlimited“.
It’s important to clarify that Hush was previously rumored and speculated to potentially play a villainous role in Matt Reeves’ eagerly awaited sequel, given Edward Elliot’s appearance in the initial film. This has already set expectations, so any hint or mention related to Hush in The Penguin could be quickly noticed by viewers.
It’s impossible for me to be convinced that the announcement of Lee and Loeb’s HUSH 2 isn’t connected, in some way, to the release of The Penguin and The Batman‘s sequel. Although we may not witness the entire villain’s storyline on the big screen right away, I have confidence that these are hints that could grow into a larger narrative in another upcoming Batman-focused series or film.
Under the condition that “Hush” doesn’t appear in the last two episodes of “The Penguin,” which are set to air on HBO at 9:00 p.m. ET, over the next two Sundays.
