Did Tom Cruise Have A Parachute For His Mission: Impossible Plane Stunts? Why He Says It Actually Would Have Been MORE Dangerous

Prior to the release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie hinted that they were going to take stunts in the movie to a new level. After watching the most recent installment of M:I, it’s clear that they certainly delivered on their promise. The action sequences in the film are jaw-dropping, with an incredible plane sequence that defies belief. It turns out that Cruise actually performed this high-altitude stunt without a parachute due to safety concerns, and I still can’t believe he managed it!

The Biplane Stunt In Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Towards the climax of the movie, it’s Ethan Hunt (Cruise’s character) who must track down Gabriel to secure a lethal capsule required for destroying The Entity. In an attempt to evade Hunt and his comrades, Gabriel takes off in a biplane, prompting Hunt to seize control of another biplane to pursue him skyward. A breathtaking stunt unfolds as Cruise scales the initial biplane mid-flight to reach its cockpit, then leaps from one plane to another, which Gabriel was piloting above him. Eventually, Hunt manages to overpower the plane Gabriel was flying, resulting in Gabriel’s demise during their struggle. In the end, Hunt safely flies away.

The setting is incredibly thrilling as Tom Cruise, portraying Hunt, manages to navigate his way up and across not one but two planes – from the landing gear to the cockpit, and even transferring mid-air between them. In spite of the powerful wind resistance evident in real-time, he manages to pull off the action sequence for the Mission: Impossible scene, all while performing an astounding feat.

How The Stunt Was Executed Without A Parachute

The Mission: Impossible franchise has arguably had some of the most dangerous stunts committed to screen, from Cruise climbing the Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol, to riding a motorcycle off of a cliff in Dead Reckoning. However this aerial sequence in Final Reckoning may just take the cake. Apparently, Cruise didn’t even have a parachute strapped to him while he climbed around each of the biplanes. The movie star said that the parachute actually would have made the stunt more dangerous, as it going off would have ensured sudden death. He explained in a recent Instagram video:

In simpler terms, I didn’t carry a parachute as it would have been extremely risky to do so in this situation. If the parachute had opened, the plane would have crashed and I would not have survived.

Although Tom Cruise appeared to be unrestrained within the aircraft, he actually had a slender wire attached to it for safety purposes. This thin tether allowed him to maneuver freely around the plane while ensuring a modicum of security. The fact that viewers could witness Cruise moving about the aircraft is crucial and lends an extraordinary, almost unbelievable quality to the scene. Despite its inherent risks, it’s evident that Cruise and his stunt team carefully planned this scene with safety as a top priority. All things considered, the final result was undoubtedly worth the effort, creating a cinematic spectacle that demands to be seen on the big screen.
