Did You Catch This Hidden Captain America Reference in the New Fantastic Four Trailer?

With “The Fantastic Four: The First Steps” set to premiere in theaters within only two short seasons, the lineup of upcoming Marvel films has become even more extraordinary. The anticipation has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels following the unveiling of the blockbuster’s first trailer and that tantalizing glimpse of Galactus. There are numerous aspects worth watching out for, such as the alternate 1960s timeline and Ebon Moss-Bacharach’s impressive CGI rendition of The Thing. And, as is customary with Marvel productions, there’s bound to be at least one Easter egg to ponder over.

In regards to the debut of the Fantastic Four’s newest adventure, it seems there might be a subtle hint about Steve Rogers’ future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following the storyline from the original Captain America film, “Captain America: The First Avenger.” However, I wonder if my interpretation could be stretching things a bit? What are your thoughts on this observation?

I Think This Movie Marquee Could Be A Subtle Nod To Captain Amerca On Ice

As a film enthusiast, watching the trailer, I found myself right in the thick of it with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm. In the heat of battle, she’s seen squaring off on a devastated street. The chilling sight of a colossal concrete support beam shattering like a felled tree was genuinely unsettling, and trust me, I wouldn’t want to be caught beneath it during its collapse.

To put it simply, it wasn’t Sue who grabbed my attention, but rather the movie poster displaying a nonexistent film titled “Subzero Intel“. This film doesn’t seem to be a real production from Hollywood or a direct reference to anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If it isn’t a sequel to a chilly spinoff of a Mortal Kombat series featuring its coldest fighter, I find myself shifting my focus towards Chris Evans’ initial appearance as an Avenger instead.

In case you recall, Captain America heroically saved the day during the events of “The First Avenger“, which led to him piloting the HYDRA aircraft called “Valkyrie” into icy waters near Greenland. Many believed he had perished, since he was found frozen and undiscovered for decades. The title “Subzero Intel“, it seems, refers to Captain America and the HYDRA plane.

Although Aiden Power isn’t explicitly linked to any other Marvel characters, I have no qualms about interpreting this name as a subtle reference to the Super Soldier Serum, given its connection to “aiding power” or “aid in power.” It’s a playful nod that I feel comfortable trusting.

The title might just as well be hinting at the fact that Chris Evans’ initial major superhero character was Johnny “Human Torch” Storm from the early Fantastic Four movies, which were released prior to the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A blend of fire and frost, you could say.

In this scenario, it seems like Sue Storm’s incident is set in the 60s or maybe even the 70s. This plot point heavily implies that someone within the universe would have made a movie about Steve Rogers, portraying him as an American hero. This notion recalls the satirical approach of “The Boys” when they mimic the MCU’s multiverse of films. It’s possible that other MCU movies didn’t acknowledge the worship of Avengers in various media forms; maybe “Subzero Intel” was a unique instance.

The movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 25, 2025. It’s unclear at this point if it will share the screen with the upcoming Phase 6 film “Subzero Intel.” However, mark your calendars for Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Sam Wilson as the new Captain America in Julius Onah’s film “Captain America: Brave New World,” set to release on Valentine’s Day, 2025.
