Did You Know? Aamir Khan was worried about his moustache on the sets of Lagaan for THIS reason; recalls director Ashutosh Gowariker

As a dedicated follower of Indian cinema with a soft spot for period dramas and sports movies, I must admit that revisiting the sets of Lagaan through this behind-the-scenes video has been an absolute delight. The meticulous attention to detail, the commitment to perfection, and the camaraderie between Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker are palpable even from this brief glimpse into their creative process.

“Teen guna lagaan dena padega!” Remember when Hollywood actor Paul Blackthorne as Captain Andrew Russell challenged Aamir Khan’s character Bhuvan in the film Lagaan? Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the 2001 epic period sports drama remains one of the most iconic movies of the Hindi cinema till date. The Oscar-nominated film also starred Gracy Singh and Rachel Shelley along with other star cast. Do you know that Aamir Khan was quite worried about donning moustaches in Lagaan? Ashutosh Gowariker shared it all.

Lately, Aamir Khan Productions posted a sneak peek from the Lagaan set on Instagram, featuring a video showing Aamir Khan trying out different moustaches. In the video, Aamir is seen shaving his beard in front of a mirror before stating, “I’ll show this to Ashu (Ashutosh Gowariker) and then return here to take it off.” Afterward, he dons a moustache and plans on seeking feedback from Ashutosh.

In the voiceover, the director Ashutosh is observed detailing Aamir’s meticulousness in his movie roles. According to the filmmaker, Aamir expressed concern over his mustache, or more specifically, his absence of one.

The scene next shows Aamir talking about how his character’s clean-shaven appearance is fitting for him. He says something like, “It’s not just raining, he’s eating and also shaving himself,” which the actor from Lagaan can be overheard saying.

Ashutosh Gowariker later disclosed that Aamir continually presented him with various styles of mustaches. In one scene, the renowned actor appears reciting his iconic line from Lagaan while wearing a mustache. However, Gowariker decided against including the mustache as part of Aamir’s character in the 2001 film.

In reference to Aamir’s words, the production team titled the post as “Was there any other way, was there some trick?
