Did you know Shah Rukh Khan wanted to replace himself with Salman Khan in Kal Ho Naa Ho? Here’s what happened

As a die-hard fan of Bollywood and its timeless classics, I can’t help but marvel at the behind-the-scenes drama that unfolded during the making of Kal Ho Naa Ho. The film, which beautifully showcases Aman, played by the inimitable Shah Rukh Khan, taught us all the importance of cherishing every moment in life. But it’s fascinating to ponder how different things might have been if SRK had chosen to step away from the project due to his back injury.

Kal Ho Naa Ho is an eternal masterpiece, and Aman, portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan, showed us the importance of cherishing each moment in life. However, it’s hard to picture any other actor embodying the humorous, relatable, and supportive Aman as Shah Rukh Khan did. Interestingly, the film’s director, Nikkhil Advani, revealed that Shah Rukh Khan initially considered leaving the movie after shooting a single scene due to his serious back injury. In an attempt to continue production, he proposed that Salman Khan be cast instead, since he would be away for treatment.

More recently, Nikkhil Advani had a chat with Mirchi Plus where he shared some intriguing stories related to the movie starring Shah Rukh Khan. It was disclosed that SRK, affectionately known as King Khan, contacted both him and Karan Johar, the writer and producer of the film, to express his desire to withdraw from the production.

Advani clarified the cause behind it; the superstar was involved in a movie like ‘Duplicate’ or another production. However, he neglected its maintenance, leading to a worsening situation gradually.

The director revealed that the initial scene Shah Rukh Khan filmed was the well-known diary scene from the movie. Nevertheless, it was captured in a different manner initially, which ultimately had to be retaken. This re-shoot happened at a train station. After completing just one scene, the actor discovered he couldn’t continue filming and urgently required medical attention.

Reflecting back, Nikkhil mentioned, “He contacted us following a single scene and told me that we wouldn’t be working together. You see, I often call Salman, so why don’t you join forces to create the movie with him.

Khan made the difficult decision to travel to Germany promptly due to the severe condition of his back problem requiring immediate surgery. Post-surgery, a six-month recovery period was necessary. Therefore, he believed it was best for the production team if he took this time off.

Instead of replacing Shah Rukh Khan, Nikkhil Advani and Karan Johar chose to be patient and wait for his recovery. Consequently, they delayed the production by six months until SRK was fit enough to return to set, whereupon we were delighted to witness him bring the captivating character Aman to life in Kal Ho Naa Ho, a role that made us laugh, smile, blush, and even shed tears.
