Did you know Shah Rukh Khan was served ‘ghatiya si chai’ by director Tigmanshu Dhulia? Filmmaker recalls what actually happened

As a devoted admirer looking back on my journey, I, Tigmanshu Dhulia, am now recognized among the elite directors who’ve graced our industry with masterpieces like Paan Singh Tomar and Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster. However, much like other artists, my beginnings were humble. Stepping into this world of cinema, I found myself working as an assistant under Shekhar Kapur during his early days in the field. Reflecting on those golden times, I fondly remember serving ‘ghatiya si chai’ to Shah Rukh Khan.

Tigmanshu Dhulia reminisced about a past project during a recent interview with ANI. He spoke of a movie called “Maut Se Jo Darte Nahi” that Shekhar Kapur was directing, featuring stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Suniel Shetty. The story goes that when they were drafting the script for this film, SRK paid a visit to Kapur’s apartment. It was Dhulia who served him tea during that meeting.

Reflecting on the past events, Haasil’s director shared that Shekhar Kapur, the director of Mr. India, had asked him to prepare tea for them in a microwave. In 1994, Tigmanshu Dhulia was unfamiliar with operating this kitchen device. “I had no idea what a microwave was until then. Yet, I ended up making a very poor cup of tea for Shah Rukh Khan,” the director confessed.

In the same interview, Dhulia discussed his heartfelt friendship with the late Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan. The director of Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns shared that after his friend’s passing, it significantly impacted his creative process. He explained that if Khan had starred in any film, it would allow him to create complex scenes confidently, knowing they would be executed skillfully. However, now he feels unable to do so anymore since, in his opinion, current actors won’t be able to deliver those intricate performances as Irrfan did.

In his conversation with the news agency, the actor-director mentioned that since Irrfan Khan moved on to his eternal home, he finds himself without friends in the industry, and this has become a challenge for him. He expressed, “A person needs companionship in real life as well. At the moment, I don’t have anyone like that. I find it difficult to let my guard down around others. It’s becoming an issue.
