As a die-hard fan of both Shah Rukh Khan and Leonardo DiCaprio, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing about the abandoned project, Xtreme City. The thought of these two titans sharing the silver screen was truly exhilarating! However, as a seasoned observer of the film industry, I can’t help but appreciate the unique insights provided by Paul Schrader regarding Shah Rukh Khan’s work dynamics and his preference for being the master of his own destiny.
At one time, the Bollywood sensation Shah Rukh Khan was discussing a potential film titled Xtreme City with Hollywood heavyweight Leonardo DiCaprio and esteemed director Martin Scorsese. However, this project ultimately fell through. Recently, director Paul Schrader disclosed the reason for its termination, stating that Shah Rukh Khan played a significant role in the movie, but he decided to back out halfway through production, resulting in the film’s demise.
In an interview on the “Pod Casty for Me” podcast, filmmaker Paul Schrader reminisced about a movie idea that never materialized. He revealed that at one juncture, he, Martin Scorsese, and Shah Rukh Khan all exhibited interest in the project, culminating in a meeting in Berlin to deliberate on it.
Martin initially planned to direct the movie, but Schrader disclosed that Shah Rukh ultimately became less enthusiastic about it during the course of the project’s development.
Paul Schrader pointed out that the actor from Jawa plays a crucial part in the film industry, frequently assuming the task of selecting directors for different segments of a movie, like musical sequences, action scenes, or intimate relationship scenes.
Schrader observed that Shah Rukh hadn’t collaborated with a director who possessed a unique, signature style before, and it seemed to him that this lack of such a director was becoming difficult for Shah Rukh.
Additionally, he noted that Shah Rukh Khan hadn’t previously undertaken projects in the Western film industry nor had he been cast as a supporting actor alongside someone as prominent as Leonardo DiCaprio.
In the storyline, it was disclosed that Shah Rukh Khan was intended to depict a mob boss. This character comes into conflict with an American police officer, who happens to be played by Leonardo, following his rescue by the Indian mob boss earlier in India.
In the process of composing his work, Paul frequently traveled to Mumbai to confer with Shah Rukh on several occasions. However, Paul sensed that Shah Rukh’s dedication seemed to be decreasing over time.
Ever since Shah Rukh put his commitment on hold, it seemed like Leo’s was following the same pattern, creating a vacuum of solid promises for our cherished project. I can hardly contain my excitement to see who jumps in next!
Back in 2013, Paul spoke to Open magazine about his fleeting fascination with a potential project blending Western and Bollywood styles. He mentioned that after attending a film festival in Delhi and encountering individuals proposing a culturally diverse film, he found the idea of combining global cinema with Bollywood flavors enticing. To him, this concept represented an uncharted, thrilling avenue worth exploring.
