In the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial for sex trafficking and racketeering, the jury has communicated to the judge that they’ve reached verdicts on four out of the five charges against him. However, they are still working on reaching a decision regarding the extensive federal racketeering charge he is facing.
On Tuesday afternoon, Judge Arun Subramanian received a message from the jury stating they were having difficulty with the RICO aspect of the case. Earlier on Monday, jurors had sent their second note since beginning deliberations in the morning to Subramanian, asking for clarification about what constitutes drug distribution. This was likely connected to the alleged crimes that federal authorities claim Combs committed and pertains to the racketeering conspiracy charge he is facing. Their query revolved around whether a person receiving an illicit substance had previously requested the accused drug distributor, if this could be considered criminal distribution.
Regardless of the swift resolution regarding the four charges, specifically two counts each for sex trafficking through force, fraud, or coercion and transporting someone for prostitution purposes, both legal teams recommended that the jury finalize their deliberations before any announcement concerning these charges against Combs, as brought forth by the government, is made.
Chris Combs has denied guilt for five charges outlined in an indictment, which include offenses like sex trafficking and racketeering. He currently remains imprisoned without bail in Brooklyn. If found guilty on all counts, the fallen hip-hop legend could potentially spend the rest of his life in prison.
During the final statements made by Attorney Christy Slavik from the Southern District of New York last week, she emphasized that for the racketeering charges to stick, the jury must all agree unanimously that Combs knowingly and intentionally consented to engage in or conspire with others to commit at least two acts of racketeering. She highlighted several alleged incidents involving Combs and his associates: drug distribution, kidnapping, an arson attack, bribery, facilitating sex trafficking, arranging travel for commercial sex (for girlfriends including Cassandra Ventura, a pseudonymous “Jane”, and multiple male sex workers), forced labor, and concealing crimes.
