The movie titled “Sanju,” featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt, was a success both critically and financially. Yet, Sanjay’s sister, Priya Dutt, has voiced her apprehensions concerning the film directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Although she recognizes the film’s influence, she believes that the movie didn’t fully capture Sanjay Dutt’s narrative and also wondered why his parents and family were absent from the biopic.
During a chat with Vickey Lalwani, Priya Dutt voiced her opinion that the movie failed to accurately portray the spirit of a biopic. This was largely because it zeroed in on just one friend (depicted by Vicky Kaushal), who, according to her, was essentially an amalgamation of multiple individuals from Sanjay Dutt’s life. Furthermore, she expressed her intrigue as to why the movie didn’t delve more into the impact of the family and the pivotal roles of his parents.
Reflecting on the film, I couldn’t help but express my thoughts. The movie, in my opinion, fell short of truly representing my mother or father. There was so much untapped potential for a richer portrayal, especially when it came to the father-son relationship. I firmly believe that more aspects could have been brought to light.
Priya Dutt mentioned that she had thought about discussing the film “Sanju” with director Rajkumar Hirani, yet in the end decided against it. She conveyed that the movie appeared to concentrate entirely on her brother’s narrative, while omitting crucial aspects of his life.
She shared that despite being drawn to phone him, she felt the movie creators likely had a distinct perspective. As she saw it, the main character in the film was Sanjay, a point she acknowledged, but it seemed overly dramatic or over-the-top, resembling more of a caricature than a realistic portrayal.
As an ardent admirer, I must express my thoughts about the film – it was a blend of characters that, perhaps, overwhelmed the original vision. Frankly, it wasn’t the masterpiece I had been eagerly anticipating. However, when it came to Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Sanjay, I found myself spellbound and felt compelled to declare it as nothing short of excellent.
Yet, she noted that the movie did not fully capture the essence of a biopic, instead focusing on specific parts of Sanjay’s life, leaving out the rich depth and intensity she had expected.
The 2018 movie “Sanju” is a biographical portrayal of the life of actor Sanjay Dutt. In this film, Ranbir Kapoor took on the main role, depicting Sanjay’s battles against drug addiction, legal complications, and his strong relationship with his father.
