Diljit Dosanjh’s Met Gala look had Maharaja of Patiala’s diamond necklace worth Rs 21,000 crore but here’s why singer couldn’t have it

At the 2025 Met Gala, Diljit Dosanjh confidently showcased his Punjabi roots on a major fashion platform, donning a unique outfit designed by Prabal Gurung. His appearance was reminiscent of the Maharaja of Patiala, leaving everyone in awe. However, the highlight of his attire was arguably the exquisite Patiala Necklace he wore, which added an extra dash of royal elegance to his grand debut.

The musical artist’s entourage was planning to obtain the historic diamond necklace that once belonged to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. Crafted by Cartier in 1928, this stunning piece boasted more than 2,900 diamonds and a total weight of over 1,000 carats. Initially priced at Rs 10 crore, it is now estimated to be worth approximately Rs 21,000 crore (equivalent to USD 2.5 billion). This extraordinary necklace remains Cartier’s most significant creation to date.

In an interview with The New York Times, Diljit’s stylist, Abhilasha Devnani, shared that they attempted to borrow the famous artifact, but were told it was locked away in a museum and unavailable for loan. With that possibility ruled out, the team sought inspiration from traditional royal collections instead, collaborating with well-known Indian jeweler Golecha to design an outfit featuring a grand turban brooch and other traditional adornments, mimicking the opulence of the royal collection.

Regardless of not donning the actual necklace, Diljit showcased an impactful homage to his heritage. Strolling down the blue carpet, he sported a kurta, tehmat, turban, and cape embellished with Gurumukhi script. To top it off, he carried a sword, thus embodying a regal-inspired appearance that seamlessly merged tradition with this season’s “Black Dandyism” theme.

In conversation with The New York Times, Diljit expressed, “I’ve just been continuing to do what I’ve always done. It’s about embracing one’s identity with honor, don’t you agree?” Regardless of any royal adornments, Diljit has captured the affection of audiences worldwide.

Every year in New York, the Met Gala – sometimes called the Costume Institute Benefit – takes place to support the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute financially. This time around, there was a significant Indian influence, with attendees like Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kiara Advani, designers such as Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, and Prabal Gurung in attendance. Notable socialites Natasha Poonawalla and Isha Ambani were also present at the glamorous event filled with celebrities.
