Directing Duo Developing ‘Treasure Island’ Remake at Disney

As a film enthusiast who has witnessed the magic of storytelling through the lens of Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, I am beyond thrilled about their upcoming adaptation of Treasure Island. Having been captivated by their unique and heartwarming approach to classic stories, as showcased in The Peanut Butter Falcon, I have no doubt that this duo will breathe new life into a timeless tale like Treasure Island.

Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz are partnering with Disney to create a fresh take on the classic tale, “Treasure Island”. Notably known for their hit movie, “The Peanut Butter Falcon”, these dynamic filmmakers have been generating buzz in Hollywood lately. Their upcoming production, “Los Frikis”, is set to release this Christmas season.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Schwartz and Nilson’s take on “Treasure Island” is in the works! Details are scarce for now, but during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss their upcoming project, “Los Frikis”, they gave us a tantalizing sneak peek into their collaboration. Nilson hinted that their pitch has a nostalgic feel reminiscent of the 1970s surf culture, which could suggest a fresh, contemporary twist on Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless tale. Schwartz added more color to this intriguing prospect, describing their approach as…

This is a take on “Treasure Island,” set in Australia’s surf culture. If Disney were to adapt it, it would undoubtedly be exciting! It captures our essence, features a makeshift family, camaraderie, suspense, and an underdog spirit.

Schwartz and Nilson were the ones behind the 2019 indie film hit, “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” which starred Zack Gottsagen, Shia LaBeouf, and Dakota Johnson. The plot revolves around a young man with Down syndrome who leaves a nursing home to chase his ambition of becoming a professional wrestler. Along the way, he forms an alliance with a rogue who becomes his mentor. In several aspects, this narrative bears similarities to Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” The creativity displayed in “Peanut Butter Falcon” by Schwartz and Nilson makes them an excellent choice for another fascinating adaptation of a classic tale.

The timeless adventure novel “Treasure Island,” originally known as “The Sea Cook: A Story for Boys,” was penned by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. Disney has previously adapted this story, with a 1950 film featuring Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins, a young lad who uncovers a map leading to the legendary treasure of pirate Captain Flint. Additionally, Disney’s 2002 animated hit Treasure Planet boasts Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Martin Short, and Emma Thompson among its voice cast. Although it didn’t initially resonate with audiences, today many appreciate the adaptation for its innovative genre-bending style and steampunk visuals. This version transported the swashbuckling escapade into a futuristic space setting by combining 2D and 3D animation. Essentially, “Treasure Island” is an action-packed tale of growth and adventure filled with danger, vibrant characters, pirate exploits, buried gold, and much more. Fingers crossed that the upcoming project will sail smoothly!

Schwartz and Nilson Refine Their Filmmaking Style in Los Frikis

Schwartz and Nilson have been commended for their knack at crafting atmospheres in their films, which depict pristine locations and “journey” narratives that resonate as genuine and vivid. Notably, Los Frikis strikes a harmonious blend of youthful exuberance with weightier themes.

Under the guidance of the duo known as Los Frikis, this film is based on real-life incidents. It portrays the tale of a musical group, unfolding amidst the punk rock revolution in 90s Cuba. The narrative primarily revolves around Gustavo, a young admirer of his elder brother Paco and their punk bandmates. As they grapple with oppression and crushing poverty, Los Frikis resort to drastic actions. In a bold move, they deliberately infect themselves with HIV in hopes of finding sanctuary within a government-run sanatorium. Within this bleak environment, they forge their own haven of camaraderie, joy, liberation, and acceptance.

Across the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie) are involved in this production. The film features Adria Arjona, Héctor Medina, and introduces Eros de la Puente, while Luis Alberto García and Jorge Perugorría complete the main cast. You can read Julian Roman’s review of the movie on MovieWeb here.
